5.0 out of 5 stars Much more than bargained for June 24, 2010

I don't normally write reviews, but I wanted to take a minute to say I am really happy with my new Brother machine as well as the Grand Slam Package. The seller Mr. Vac & Mrs. Sew did deliver in two days and the packaging was very sturdy. I was very surprised to see two big boxes delivered. Once I had determined which was machine and which was goodies, I was more excited to open the additional box that came with my new Brother. I had expected the thread to be sample sized about 2 inches long and ˝ inch in diameter. I was very surprised to see full size spools in 61 colors. Also were 144 bobbins all pre-wound and ready for me to start. Included was a full size of Tear away stabilizer, again I was expecting sample sizes.

The Brother has been very user friendly; I have to admit I was a little scared to use it. It is my first embroidery machine. I read through the instructions briefly and I was off. (mostly to find out how to secure the material and stabilizer in the hoop).
I feel like the guy from Ronco - you just set it and forget it. The only time you have to pay attention is when it is time to change the tread.

I also like the options set up. I can have the machine programmed to back up / lock the thread at the end of a stitch and cut the thread for me when I finish. I am using this machine for quilting and I like not having to get out my scissors when I am piecing strips or squares. I have used it for quilting finish on one project so far and it walked great on the two layers of material and low loft batting. I it also embroideries through those layers just as easy. My first project was a baby blanket and I was able to put the babies name on after I completed the project. Nice big electric blue letters for a little boy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother! December 29, 2010
I thoroughly researched a new machine in time for Christmas after many years of Singer, which I feel has declined in quality over the years. I found this deal on line and (hint, hint) told my son about it to rally all the kids to pitch in. I couldn't be happier!! I'm an art teacher, so had my whole Christmas break to "play" with the new machine. The directions provided are some of the most detailed and helpful I've ever seen. Presser feet are metal again! The machine simply invites you to get started. The supplementary package is amazing and is all it promised - and much more than I expected - as a skeptical customer. The best thing I've gotten in a L-O-N-G time!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful August 22, 2012
I did a lot of research and soul-searching (!) before I decided to buy this package. My main conflict was: the 4 by 4 inch embroidery field. I really would like something larger, but I just couldn't justify the expense (there is a big jump in price among the brands, with Brother being the least expensive by far) when I am basically doing this for fun/hobby. Some history: I started to learn machine embroidery because the school where I work has a Viking embroidery machine that nobody knew how to use. So I offered to learn how to use it. The Joann store near my school started a free embroidery Viking club, that I have attended. Well, I kind of caught the bug, so to speak, but I just could never ever afford a brand like Viking or Pfaff. Hence the months of research and agonizing and coveting machines. But this package go such good reviews, so I made my decision. And I am very happy.

I did contact customer service at the Mr.Vac/Mrs. Sew and they were really great, which is a plus. I didn't feel the most comfortable about buying a machine via the Internet (it's nice to have a real store in case of a problem), but it seems like if I have any reasonable problems that aren't operator (me!) induced, they would be very good about helping me.

I've had my machine about 2 weeks and have been playing with it and learning how it works. So far I've had only 2 small problems, and both were my fault. I didn't thread it properly one time (and the machine gave me a message on screen that I needed to fix the upper thread!) and then it took me a while to figure out how to download/upload some free patterns I got from the Brother web-site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Machine for the Money October 10, 2010

I have to say, I have had great luck buying through Amazon, even though I have to pay the taxes for Washington state, I usually always get the best deal out there.

In regards to the Brother machine, so far it is a winner. I have only tried the straight stitch and the zigzag, but I will leave updates on how well it does on the the other stitches, button hole, and the embroidery stitching. After sewing with 1974 Kenmore sewing machine it's like night and day so far. The only problem I have had, or I should say my mother has had is sewing netting...but I do believe it is her fault, because if you go slow I have had no problem, but she forgets sometimes and the and will go faster then she should and the netting has gotten entangled in the machine, but it is an easy fix...I just need to remind her to take it easy on the speed when sewing light weight materials.

I am very happy with this machine and the capabilities it has. I was reluctant at first to buy a Brother, because most of my Friends have Vikings and Berinas and swear by these brands...but that price base is well beyond my budget. I figured since this machine is featured on television show it would have to be well built and reviews backed up my assumption. So when I have the time to spend to learn and apply these awesome array of stitches, I will post my reviews on that stitch, so far I am happy.
