I purchased this device to consolidate fax and scanning capabilities. I already have a color laser printer when I need high quality printing, but I now use this as my "everyday" printer when I need to print one or two pages real quick (instead of firing up the laser, which takes a while). The ADF is a nice little feature for the price, although it takes a bit of getting used to. It took me a couple of tries to get the ADF to activate. The software has built in OCR and I found the network scanning capabilities nice. For example, in my small office, I have a few machines and can scan to any of them. The ink is also quite affordable for this device.

There are a few minor drawbacks. The implementation of the memory card reader is weak. Also, if the phone line is in use, you can't use ANY of the features except printing from a computer. No scanning or faxing to memory. When sitting on hold for support from a vendor, this can hold up productivity.

All around though, this is a great device with a small form factor and I have been pleased, especially considering the price after discounts and rebates.

So far so great January 8, 2006
By R. Yu
I bought this MFC two weeks back and love it so far! Build quality is great and comes with SD/xD/CF/MemoryStick interface. I do a lot of scanning work and need copying/printing job once in a while. SO far I've scanned hundreds of papers and not a single problem.

640CW comes with a feeder with 10 pages capacity, not big but
good enough for me. it would be nice if duplexer for scanning is available. Wireless is not difficult to setup from PC via software provided. however it's not recommended to do it from machine itself, some weird characters screwed up display once in a while, ended up i have to reset the machine a couple of times. but setting up from PC is easy, just follow instructions.

Printing speed is reasonable via USB but seems to be a bit slow from wireless( This part I'm not very positive since I used different resolutions). Originally I was going to buy Canon PIXMA 780 but of price is a major concern. 780 comes with duplexer which is definitely a plus (...). Of course Canon could be a better machine in terms of performance, however definitely this compact Brother MFC is good enough to perform my daily work very well.

I have had many different printers and scanners. I've had problems with some, not with others. I typically like the business look of laser. But...I deceided to try this Brother MFC out mostly because of all of the features as well as the wireless. It is an excellent printer. I have been impressed by the quality of the print. The copy feature is very nice. I never realized how much I was missing by not having a copier. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because of the setup/software. It's not too bad, but switching from USB to network to wireless requires installing some software again. It would be nice to just switch between them if needed. A great multifunction machine, especially for the price.

Won't work at all if you run out of ink
This product is near worthless. The scan function will not work if any of the ink cartridges are empty.

Love it -- when it works
