Amazon.com Review

This multifunction device was selected as best in its class, garnering PC Magazine's Editors' Choice award. The true multifunction capabilities in the Brother MFC-7150C include color printing, color copying, color scanning, and even a form of color PC faxing, along with plain-paper faxing and video image capturing.

Setting up the multifunction unit was time-consuming. We connected the printer cable (included), AC power, and phone line before moving on to the four ink cartridges. (Two of the ink cartridges dripped slightly as we removed their protective tape.) When we turned on our PC, Windows 98 detected the Brother 7150C and ran the New Hardware wizard, but the wizard could not proceed because the 7150C's CD-ROM did not contain printer information in its root directory. Instead, we cancelled the New Hardware wizard and ran the lengthy Setup program on the CD-ROM.

In our tests, we used the MFC-7150C for a variety of printing, copying, and faxing tasks, checking text and graphics in both color and black and white. Colors were remarkably vibrant. Some banding was present on all graphics samples, but this is typical for ink-jet printers. Text was sharp and all edges were straight; however, close inspection of letters revealed tiny imperfections (dots) common to nearly all ink-jet printouts. Finally, using superfine mode, we printed a previously scanned color photograph on coated paper. Although the photo printing process was very slow, the output was warm and rich, with only minor pixelation. Color copying and scanning were similarly slow, and, even in superfine mode, the copies were soft compared to the original.

Still, the 7150C combines more functions than most multifunction units, and its performance is certainly commensurate with its price. For most home and small-office applications, the 7150C is a great low-cost alternative to a separate printer, scanner, and fax machine.

Pros:

  • Great software bundle
  • Loaded with features
  • Includes printer cable and coated paper

Cons:

  • Ink tanks difficult to load
  • Superfine printing and copying is slow

1.0 out of 5 stars Mine Broke, October 17, 1999
By
bargej@aol.com (Barry from the South) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brother MFC 7150C - Printer - color - ink-jet - Legal - 1440 dpi x 720 dpi - up to 6 ppm (mono) / up to 4 ppm (color) - capacity: 200 sheets - Parallel - AC 120 V (Electronics)
Mine broke and there's nobody nearby who can fix it. It worked great for a while -- especially the color reproduction. I was amazed at the good color copying quality.

Then after eight months the printing started to get really blurry, and despite following the instructions, I was unable to get it to stop being blurry.

Finally, the gripper mechanism that feeds the faxes stopped working, meaning that my five page fax would all go through at once unless I tried to feed it through sheet by sheet.

I think the technology in this product is good but the manufacturing techniques and design are cheap and inferior. I wouldn't recommend this if you are going to use it a lot or for your business.

3.0 out of 5 stars MFC 7150, December 14, 1999

This review is from: Brother MFC 7150C - Printer - color - ink-jet - Legal - 1440 dpi x 720 dpi - up to 6 ppm (mono) / up to 4 ppm (color) - capacity: 200 sheets - Parallel - AC 120 V (Electronics)
I very pleased with my Brother 7150, except one issue: In 6 months of using this machine, I have already spent more on ink than I have in 6 yrs of using my little powerhorse laser printer (an old HP 4L).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For an All-In-One Machine, December 12, 1999

Have used my 7150c for about 9 months and am very pleased overall, but I did have to get a replacement machine sent to me by Brother because the numerical keypad was inoperative (could not send faxes or place calls on the machine). Tech support was great, and they sent me the replacement by FedEx. Print and copy quality are very good (at least as good as comparable machines from HP and Canon), and the print and copy speed are MUCH FASTER than other manufacturers.
