Can a multifunction machine really do everything you need? Unless you're looking for top-of-the-line printing, the Brother MFC660MC 6-in-1 multifunction is probably more than sufficient to fulfill your demands. It combines external and PC fax capability, a copier, a printer, and a telephone and message center/answering machine--all designed to work together in one unit. With the Brother MFC660MC, you generate crisp scans, print sharp text, and make copies with enlargements and reductions, all at the touch of a button.

To set up the unit, we snapped on the wire paper guides, plugged in the handset, and connected the unit to our PC. We installed the software and then pulled up a comfortable chair and educated ourselves about all of the features of the MFC660MC using the thorough owner's manual. The functional telephone with speed dial and hold buttons is an added advantage. The clear 16-digit LCD screen helped us follow our own work as we programmed up to 124 of our important fax and phone numbers.

In our tests, the Brother 6-in-1 printed 2 ppm in 200 x 400 dpi resolution. The 50-sheet paper tray made a convenient backup to our main printer. We appreciated the convenience of having an in-house copier capable of reducing and enlarging in preset increments. We copied up to 15 originals at one time without paper jams and utilized automatic sorting for longer documents. The flatbed scanner handled books and text documents. Using 400 x 400 dpi (interpolated) resolution with OCR (optical character recognition) to speed editing, we scanned double-sided documents with satisfactory results. The driver software gave us the option to save the pages in the proper order.

A built-in digital answering system offers 30 minutes of recording and five personal mailboxes to store both incoming voice and fax messages. The fax transmits a page every 6 seconds and permits documents of up to 20 pages to feed automatically. Outgoing documents of 15 pages automatically feed. You can use your PC to send faxes directly from Windows-based applications. And you can continue working on other projects while the fax function works in background, freeing your PC for other tasks. To save print time and ink, you can also look at faxes onscreen before printing them.
