Received this item in good shape and labeler appears to work fine. However, package included no batteries and only a "sample" 1/2 inch TZ tape! The two tapes as advertised were the selling point when I ordered this item.

The Brother label maker is far better than the embossed plastic dial-a-letter label guns of old. You can chose colors or widths, font style and size. The instructions are fairly easy to comprehend and the programming is fairly intuitive. You can buy water resistant raw label cartridges too. The price of cartridges is my main complaint. It is like computer printer ink...once you own the machine, the maker owns your choice of refills.

There are lots of options available, most of which I never use, but at least Brother was thinking ahead. I want for nothing when it comes to options. And I must say, that if you ever saw my hand printing or handwriting you would understand how essential this product is for me. It was a gift from someone that understands me. I have used mine for over seven years now. I use it only occasionally, but when I need it, I REALLY need it.

I use it in my home office for files. I use it in my kitchen to label pot and pan sizes, containers of staples (now I can tell all-purpose flour from cake flour in my clear Snap-Ware canisters, for example, or medium grain rice is now distinguished from long grain rice at a glance). I use it to label those so-useful Rubbermaid drawer tray organizers that hold kitchen gadgets...you know the kind (rectangular in shape, comes in like four sizes), organized by similar function...openers, veggie tools, meat gadgets, measuring tools, bar tools, etc. I use it in my workshop adhered to my white pegboard to distinguish tools from each other and to clue the rest of the family as to where a tool should be returned and the proper name of the tool...a kind of educational medium for the tool-challenged, hehe. The labeling works very well, but the tool-returning thing only works fairly well, not perfectly, but you already know how it is.

___________ WOULD RECOMMEND THIS LABEL MAKER _____________________

I have had my P1830 labeler for years and it works very well.
It is easy to use. I use mine often and enjoy using the 3/4" tape (black on yellow tapes is a great refill option - I order that color often -- EZ to see).

I use this labeler atleast 2x a week keeping everything organized.
If you want the label to be easy to see, simply CAP LOCK ALL LETTERS TO MAKE PRINT LARGER.

I also have purchased several label machines as "functional gifts" for friends and family. I think I have only replaced the batteries once or twice. It uses AA batteries.

I received the item described with two full length 1/2" black on white cartridges. and 6 AA batteries. So far it has worked great, similar to other P-Touch products I had used in the past. The only complaint which applies to all P-Touch models is that ~ one inch of tape is wasted in the leader. (The trailer can be set to be narrow, but it seems you have to set it every time)

I've had mine for a couple of years, purchased it at Costco for about $30 IIRC, but I hadn't had an opportunity to use the 3/4" wide cassette until recently. Then, I noticed something odd: with the font size set to "MAX", the printed text wasn't any larger than on the 1/2" tape set to "Large".

After a good deal of searching online I found a tape/font size comparison chart at Brother. As one cannot post a URL here at Amazon reviews, to see the chart,

Google "Description of Problem 100000003006"
The first result is "How do I change the character font size?", and if you go there you'll see a selection of different tape sizes & font sizes. I could never achieve the "MAX" size, on any tape.

That page *does* say, "The character size MAX can only be use with a ?-inch tape, all the text must be in upper case, and the Style has to be set for Normal, no Underline or Frame," but what size tape is "?-inch"? What does it mean?

I finally called Brother. The first tech took 15-20 minutes, was friendly but eventually escalated the problem as he could not help. The next day I received a call from Traci, who continued with resetting the machine and such, none of which yielded larger text. She had me print a sample (I chose to print "aA") with the 1830C set to "MAX" on both 1/2" & 3/4" tape samples, then I scanned the results and emailed that scan to her.

The following Monday, she called me again, and had the answer. Now that I know what it is, I can tell you how to find it for yourself:

Google "Description of Problem 100000015977"

The first result is a page on Brother's P-Touch FAQ, which in part says:

"Note: MAX is for 3/4-inch tape, with all the text is in Caps, the Style is normal, and no Frame/Underline.
