Fun, Works Well, but Beware!,
By jingleman@aol.com (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brother P-Touch PT1700 Electronic Labeling System (Office Product)
Finally, a full-featured labeler at the right price. Brother brought the price way down (it's also 49.99 at Staples or OfficeMax) to where it belongs. Tons of whistles and bells and a lot of fun to use. Makes labeling anything a snap. BUT.....as usual, KEEP YOUR WALLET OPEN! The manufacturer designed this thing to nail you on the back end. The tapes to keep this thing running are expensive. In addition, another prime example of my biggest pet peeve, NO ADAPTOR!!!! Why Brother, and everyone else, tries to grossly overcharge for these things is an insult. That alone brings my rating to three stars instead of four.

Great for Gardeners!,
By Kmrsy "kmrsy" (Fort Wayne, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brother P-Touch PT1700 Electronic Labeling System (Office Product)
I bought the Brother P-Touch 1700 to make weather resistant labels to adhere to zinc markers to label plants in the garden. These laminated tz tapes resist sun-fade, peeling, you name it. This machine is less expensive than some other brother models because it only prints one line, but this suits my needs just fine. The trick to peeling off the backing is to do it with the backing facing you. This displays a small clear margin into which you insert your nail and peel apart. Easy, once you get the hang of it. Another hint is that you should change the default for tape feed so you don't waste valuable tape. You can solve the battery problem by buying the A/C adapter. Brother insists that only theirs, which is designed for this use, can be used safely. Whether true or not, I purchased the adapter for ... and it makes using the unit easier. I also purchased the molded carrying case, which keeps everything securely together. This system worked so well, that our Master Gardeners ordered 2 units and we use this machine exclusively to label all of our plants in our Display Gardens. The unit is very easy to use and provides permanent labels for any possible need.

Razors and razor blades,
This review is from: Brother P-Touch PT1700 Electronic Labeling System (Office Product)
I have enjoyed using all of the Brother P-Touch label makers I have used. I bought the PT-1700 locally for much less than ...is currently ofering it for (mine was [amt]). One regret is that the PT-1700 doesn't do 2-line labels. The PT-1750 does this and higher models allow for additional lines of printing. I just bought my father a PT-1750 for the holidays (Brother is running a [amt] rebate on that model).Be advised that the refill tape cartridges are where Brother is making the big bucks (just like razor blades and inkjet cartridges). The unit is also less than frugal when it comes to batteries. Complaints aside, an easy to use product that works well.
