3.0 out of 5 stars Not What I Had Hoped For
This printer seems fundamentally like a vehicle for Brother to sell its labels. It is certainly a reasonable system to use, the labels don't jam in the printer too often, the printing is clean, and it beats having to run a sheet of Avery labels through a copy machine in most cases. But they have certainly not produced anything close to what I want in a labeling system...

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great!, May 12, 2006

I purchased this because I hate printing labels on a sheet. This works great. I have used it to print labels, name tags, banners so far it is great.

I saw the other reviews. One reviewer loved Dymo. I briefly owned a Dymo(not sure of exact model), it looked like a nice printer. The problems I encountered were with the software, it crashed my system. After no success in getting the software to work I decided to return it to the store. I am comfortable with technology but I am not a "techie" I just want to be able to get something to work with a resonable amount of time and effort. If the Dymo software works for or you have the technical skill to make it work for you then check out Dymo.

When I saw the OL -550 on Amazon I asked a few friends. One friend who works in a school uses this everyday to print lables when sending out applications and loves it. I decied to try it and have been happy with the printer and the software, it is fast. I use the included software to print individual labels and banners. The printer also works well with Outlook and Excel, I use both for bigger jobs. It does not require ink either, no cartridges to buy and learn to install, so that will save you time and money.

In fairness to the reviewer who complained that it only uses Brother labels, I happen to live in an area with many discount office stores and I am always able to purchase labels cheaply. So if this is not an issue for you - this it is a great fast powerhouse label printer.

UPDATE: We got a new computer that runs Vista. I was able to easily get online and update the software and drivers for this printer and it works great. I have been using the printer with the Vista for a couple of months and have had no problems since switching over to Vista compatable software. Brother has the downloads on their web site.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, March 20, 2006

We looked at both the Dymo and the Brother. There was no contest. We have been using ours for over a year in a busy medical practice and it has worked flawlessly. It doesn't jam or need ribbons or ink so the thermal paper is a little more than just plain labels. The cost is more than justified when you add up printer costs that are avoided by using thermal paper. Plus, the added ease of how nicely this machine works right off the computer makes it really a terrific machine. It has an excellent program that is pre-set to print to the labels or you can print off Excel, Word or other programs directly to the machine. You can also print speciality labels with pictures, etc... and also use larger sized labels for shipping. Probably the best bang for the buck we made capital expenditure wise last year.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quick and simple, August 22, 2007
This review is from: Brother P-Touch QL-550 Quick PC Label Printer (Office Product)
I run a lot of labels at home and work and decided to buy this printer. The software that comes with it could stand a rewrite, and after much hassle with it I finally decided to make my own templates in Word and Endicia Dazzle. Endicia does not claim this printer works with the software, but believe me it does, And it is cheaper per label than the Dymo.

It is not as quiet as I would like, but nothing is perfect. The fat that it is thermal rocks. No ink refills, EVER! And I have been using mine for about 3 years now, over 4 hours a day. This monster is a work horse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Label Printer, January 23, 2008

This label printer does exactly what was made to do and does it well. I sell books on Amazon and use this to print labels. It does an excellent job. The included software makes it easy to create a database of names and addresses that you can use with the labels. You can also easily import graphic images and put the images on the labels. I had thought about saving a little money and getting the model that doesn't support automatic cutting of the labels and am glad that I didn't. The labels print quickly and don't smudge if you rub them. The printer can use an assortment of different size and types of labels . The labels come on a roll that is very easy to insert into the printer (it's almost foolproof). Easy to turn off and back on to conserve power. Takes up very little desk space and connects easily via USB.I've had mine for over a month and an very glad that I finally bought one. I can't think of one negative thing to say about this printer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Love It, But ..., February 5, 2007
This review is from: Brother P-Touch QL-550 Quick PC Label Printer (Office Product)
We've used the QL-500 P-Touch printer for over a year and have never had a problem with the printer or the software.

I'd give it 5-stars except for one thing that I've never seen discussed: the labels turn brown. I have a set of files about a year old that are kept out in a sunny room. The labels are browning and are now several shades darker than the manila folders.

Don't know if it's heat or light. The labels on files kept in the file cabinet still look white.

Not a huge deal, but something to consider.

I use this printer in a small office to print labels for files, letters and boxes. This model has the built-in cutter that works perfect. It is yet another item we can no longer do without.
