  • Outline & Remove: This app lets you remove selected portions of a hard copy document, then produces a physical copy of the remaining information.
  • NoteScan: This app prints a note-taking template from the cloud, in your choice of 1, 2, 4, or 8 pages on a single sheet of letter-sized paper. Once the sheet is filled with notes, scan it using NoteScan and the pages will be automatically separated and converted into a series of JPEGs for easy storage or sharing.

This is a fairly well engineered printer/scanner, both hardware and software. Because this device is new on the market (Oct 2013), there isn't any info out there yet and I had to dig through the marketing brochures and play the "spot the difference" game to decide between the 3 sibling models: this MFC-J6520dw, the MFC-J6720dw, and the MFC-J6920dw. Unfortunately Brother did not provide a nice concise "these are the differences" summary so I will do that to perhaps save you the trouble. I have not used the 6720 or 6920 so this is just based on my use of the 6520 and research of Brother's documentation of the others. As best as I can determine the 3 models are all quite similar with the noted differences:

* Scans up to 11x17 with both ADF and glass. For scanning thick items like books, the lid hinge raises up. ADF paper width slider only goes as narrow as 5.8", so this is not good for things like receipts. You would have to scan small items on the glass. But, the auto page size detection does not work at all for pages/receipts with a white background.
* Scans only one side of the document. The software has a checkbox to allow you to scan "continuously" meaning you can scan multiple documents and/or multiple sides of the documents manually (prompts for "Continue" or "Finish" after each page) and they will be collated into one PDF.
* There are nice scan options such as scan a 11x17 and turn it into 2 8.5x11 pages, scan 2 8.5x11 pages into one 11x17 page, scan into a secure PDF, OCR, .xps documents.
* Prints on both sides nicely (prints one side, sucks the paper back up, and prints the other side)
* The manual paper feed in the back for printing can accept most any size paper but you can only insert one page at a time (not a stack).

An excellent all-in-one printer/scanner that quickly produces good quality copy and legal-size scans; also renders high-quality color copy within a reasonable time-frame while consuming far less ink than our previous all-in-one inkjet, bringing costs way down especially with the higher-capacity, lower cost black ink cartridge; the wireless setup works extremely well for both our Mac and PC devices located on the same floor; a very successful burn-in period; very happy; the only test this unit hasn't passed is the test of time.

My trusty but ink-guzzling 3 year old Canon Pixma finally died and I was forced to find a replacement. After an extensive review of available all-in-ones (considering ink maintenance usage for the first time), and finding nothing without mixed reviews (no matter what the price), I decided to go for my first Brother. Besides being a bit on the loud side when extracting paper, this seems perfect... with a compact design, intuitive controls, super fast/beautiful printing (even double sided), and flawless batch scanning and copying. So far so good. Only time will tell how long it goes without developing some sort of printing or paper handling problem (as printers are prone to develop). My only gripe is not with the machine - but with Amazon. They dropped the price twice within 2 weeks of my $206 order. (once before it even shipped) - and it is now $55 less than I paid. As they have removed their price drop refund policy, it's too late for me - but the price is an absolute steal now. BTW, Staples has the previous year's version of this going for $199.

UPDATE: 12/4/13 - After spending almost 2 hours on the phone with brother, I got to a MAC Specialist. They had me check the driver installed. I had the Brother -AirPrint driver installed. Apparently, you want the Brother - CUPS driver installed. I think by default when you are installing the driver, it just chooses the AirPrint (APPLE) Driver. But there is a drop down available to change it. After I did that, I now have a lot of color and quality control options available when I print. I chose a random (high quality, photo, vivid) option. Put in a sheet of photo paper and printed. It looks a lot better than it did before. So I upped my review from 3 to 4 starts. I'm fighting with Brother now to see if they are willing to replace my ink since I used it all up in testing and troubleshooting at their request. When all it was, was a driver issue. We'll see what they are willing to do. From the get go, it doesn't sound like they are too willing to replace it for me!

I received the printer, unboxed it, plugged it in, and was printing/scanning in under 8 minutes. Then I tried to print a color photo and the colors were way off! Yellows are orange. Blues are grey. Greens are black. I spent over an hour and a half on the phone with Brother tech support, we did a bunch of things, and printed out about 15 photos. (using my ink and photo paper).

When it was all said and done, it looks like with a lot tweaking and experimenting you can get the colors 80% right. My biggest disappointment, the crummy Mac Print Drivers. In the Windows drivers, there are all kinds of settings for VIVID, NATURAL, and other color correcting options (contrast, hue, brightness, etc).
