4.0 out of 5 stars Great printer, confusing setup, August 27, 2008
This review is from: Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer (Office Product)
Great label printer. Fast, reliable, and quiet. A bit bulky but the size makes it easy to change the label.

Note about setting up printer for postage:
I bought this printer to print folder labels and postage. Folder labels was easy enough but postage proved difficult. I read on a forum that you could print USPS click and ship postage. Signed up on USPS and spent a few hours trying to fit the postage image onto the label. Finally, a search revealed that paypal has this functionality. I signed into paypal and under Profile -> shipping settings set the printer settings to ql-550 (ql-570 not listed but it's okay). It gives you a heads up that you need Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment to print labels to your label printer and points to you a link for the no longer unsupported J2SE JRE from 2005 that no longer works. You do need Java Run Time Environment but can use the newer one. You can get it by searching for JRE or get the older one by searching J2SE JRE.

Then I went into Label Printing Application found under Aution Tools tab -> PayPal MultiOrder Shipping and printed two labels. Wasted about 1 foot of labels trying to get them to print. Then finally realized there is another setting inside this MultiOrder Shipping App under Edit -> Settings. I set this to the ql-550 and hit the "Reprint" button (next to View Details...) under the History tab. I wasted another foot of continuous label trying to print the labels. Then realized that reprinting keeps the original printing formatting. Had to void out the labels and /really/ re-print them (luckily I didn't have to refill in the shipping details). Very annoying experience. end rant.

1. Download Java http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
2. Create or login your Paypal Account
3. Click auction tools -> free MultiOrder Shipping
4. If Getting Started pops up click Close
5. Click Edit -> Settings -> Print Settings -> Label Printer, and choose ql-550. (Also I unchecked packing slips and receipt. Packlist comes up after printing labels and you can choose your regular printer)
6. Click Ok
7. You are done. Click File -> Create New Order

Also, turn off pop-up blocker before trying to print and you might want to change your OS's "Printer Preferences" paper size to the correct value so you don't have to do this everytime you print. The default is wrong for the ql-570.

This is a big feature for the ql series so they should have some better documentation but it is equally paypals fault for poor documentation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brother QL-570 lends professionalism to your business, March 22, 2008

I got this a few weeks ago and I've been enjoying beautiful label printing since. While Brother has many label printers, this model is all you really need. It was actually recommended by a Brother reptile ;) at Macworld.

Set-up was easy and I'm using it with both Mac Leopard and Windows Vista and I've experienced no problems printing whatsoever. The Windows software has more features than the Mac side and feels "slicker" too.

The QL-570 prints fast and silent. It's a little bigger than you would expect, but that's due to the easy-to-change label cartridges, which are a big plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little printer, April 21, 2008
This review is from: Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer (Office Product)
I use this printer on a Mac with OS X 10.5, and it works great. I think of new uses for the labels just about every day. Its super fast, and changing labels or tape is a snap. They come in a cartridge that just drops into the printer. The printer reads the label size so its available to the software.

One other nice thing about this printer is lots of type of labels and tape. There is circle labels, squares, big ones and small ones, and continuous tape in both paper and film.

One slight negative is that the software doesn't make it as easy to enter a POSTNET barcode as it should. You need to manually enter the zip code and manually position the bar code. Not terrible, but not as nice as the rest of the software.

Overall this is a great printer, durable, and you will love it.

This is a great product; it combines a very quiet, attractive printer unit with well designed and easy to operate software. The installation was problem free on a Windows Vista computer. The software is easy to use and it's easy to print all sorts of labels without reference to the user's manual. However, should you wish to explore all of its capabilities, you'll find the software to be quite sophisticated. Switching label types is a breeze because each roll has its own spool -- it's faster than replacing tape in your Scotch tape dispenser. The software and printer are both graphic capable, so you can easily print logos, artwork, photos, etc., on your labels.

Recently upgraded from QL-500. This one was a better buy and has more features, many of which I'm still discovering. Excellent little printer with a wide variety of uses.

1.0 out of 5 stars You shouldn't need to be a graphic designer to print a label, April 20, 2010
This review is from: Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer (Office Product)
I've owned a half-dozen label makers over the years, but never before had the misfortune to purchase a Brother product for this purpose. (I purchased this one ecause I've had good luck with Brother laser printers).

EVERY other label maker, right back to the days of DOS, provided a simple, straightforward method of creating a variety of basic mailing and shipping labels.

Not the software supplied with this printer: you basically have to learn a (poor quality) graphic design package to perform the simplest functions.

Now, I am not unfamiliar with such packages, for example I work daily in Photoshop, but after two hours of screwing around with this ill documented, unintuitive, slow, confusing low resolution editor I've yet to produce a satisfactory label - the software is not merely AS BAD as many other reviewers here maintain. ITS WORSE, in fact I would have to say this is the worst piece of software I've encountered last four or five years. (In fact, now that I think about it, it looks, and feels like one of the early graphical programs created for DOS environments before there were such standardized graphical environments as Windows and the Mac).

And without the ability to design labels in a straightforward manner, it doesn't matter how good the hardware is.

I'd just add that given the frustration with the software reported by other users here, you'd think that Brother would at least have the decency and common sense to provide some kind of template downloads to allow users to get up and running rapidly, but there don't seem to be any at their site, and the included templates are worthless.

Bottom line: unless you consider learning a frustrating, ill designed editor in order to create basic labels a good use of your time, look elsewhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and Pleasing, June 29, 2008

The Brother QL-570 is quick to set up, the software is easy to install, the included templates are a snap to edit and manipulate to your own needs. While I found the P-touch Editor software just a little slower than normal running under Vista, it is stable and functional. The machine itself is a breeze.

Installing the labels is a snap, and the automatic cut-off feature is great. I would buy this product again without a qualm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer, May 31, 2009

Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer
It's not often that I need to print a label, but frequently when I do I find that I only need one label and not a whole page. While it is possible to print one label at a time on a 30 sheet page, it is a pain. Where I work, we use the DYMO labeler to print barcodes. I also use it to print address labels as needed, again, only needing one and not a full page. So, I figured that it would be nice to get a DYMO label printer to use at home. Checking the Internet for the DYMO, I was floored by the price. Especially since I would only be using the printer for the occasional label. So, I looked online for just "label printers". The Brother appeared in the list and not only is much less expensive than the DYMO, but it also lets you use more than one label size, is easier to load than the DYMO, and lets you easily design the labels with the P-Touch Editor. At this point, the only thing that the Brother does not do that the DYMO does, that I would like to see it do, is check the address on the Internet. If I enter a mailing address in the DYMO, I can hit Check Address and it will go somewhere online and confirm the address and add the +4 to the zip code. But, other than that one thing, the Brother is much more flexible and user friendly than the DYMO. I highly recommend to everyone (including my IT at work) to get a Brother QL-570 label printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up, easy use, versatility. NO WASTED TAPE!, January 29, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer (Office Product)
I researched labelers and was concerned about the repeated references to wasted tape. Since labelers generally have a low up front cost and then use expensive media this is an important, if not primary consideration when exploring options. This labeler has ZERO waste. I am using the included tape roll and have had nice results creating folder labels. I have not tried the wide variety of choices in labels.
This unit comes with an AC adapter, another issue important to selecting a labeler. Many reviews complain about quick battery drainage. Not an issue with this unit.

Note: This unit REQUIRES PC connectivity. So if portability is a need look elsewhere. But I highly recommend this unit as a desktop solution.

Brother QL-570 Professional Label Printer.
This is a great product for a small business owner or organized professional. The printer works easily and prints quickly. It is far superior to the old system of printing a full sheet of labels at one time. This allows you to print labels individually. I recommend this product.
