Red Holloway's "Brother Red" is another remaindered Prestige CD that I picked up for just a couple of bucks in a Newbury Comics cut-out bin. Another member of the Jack McDuff group that produced George Benson and Joe Dukes, the tenor saxophonist also made some solid soul jazz recordings as a leader, generally with the organist as co-pilot in order to capitalize on their band's success. Another Red, baritone saxophonist Alvin "Red" Tyler, also features here, along with bassists Wilfred Middlebrooks and Tommy Shelvin splitting duties. This CD features material recorded in Los Angeles in February 1964, but originally released over 3 LPs, the best of which "Cookin' Together" accounts for the first seven tracks. "Brother Red" is by no means essential, but jazz fans looking for classic organ soul grooves should get this before "Red" fades to black.
