5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Machine!!
This machine was recommended to me by a close relative that is very experienced in embroidering. I was interested in doing some things but didn't want to spend a lot of money on a machine as I didn't know if I would really like embroidering. As a novice, I didn't want to deal with anything too complicated. WOW, what a surprise. I love this machine!! I have never...

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissappointed
I found that while the sewing machine can do many things,it is poorly constructed. I visited aa Brother Retailer who informed me that they not carry this machine because of the poor construction. They told me that I should be very careful with the thread cassette since they break easily and cannot be fixed and must be replaced which is costly.
I find that...

As a novice, I didn't want to deal with anything too complicated. WOW, what a surprise. I love this machine!! I have never embroidered anything in my life! Opened the machine and within an hour had embroidered my first design. It was only my initials but I couldn't believe how easy it was with this machine. I'm hooked! No doubt I have much to learn about embroidering..but for me, I couldn't have found a better machine! It's GREAT!!! Very happy I chose this machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just A Little Research, January 21, 2006
This review is from: Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine (Kitchen)
I have just purchased this SE-270D. I had a very tough time finding one in stock - NEW. I had an older machine Euro-Pro that I just loved but it quit sewing stitches. I am thrilled that after researching this Brother uses the exact same bobbins (I have 60+ of SA156). It also uses Low Shank Quick attaching feet that all my specialty rufflers, etc. will easily adapt to. It has an extra thread holder that mounts on top of the thread cartridge so you can use twin needles or your favorite thread. It is very versatile. The *.pes format for embroidery is very popular and many companies offer FREE downloads of graphics. You must check it out, and Amazon is the best place I know of. Thank You, Jeanne from Western Montana It has opened up a whole new world of sewing fun and adventures. PERFECT & Flawless, they have included ease of use for everything. It has never been so much fun to sew. Thank You Amazon

5.0 out of 5 stars Brother Embroidery and Sewing Machine, December 28, 2005
This review is from: Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine (Kitchen)
I received this machine as a birthday gift and couldn't be happier with it! I thought it would be intimidating to use, but on the contrary it is extremely easy to switch between sewing and embroidery. The automatic threading system makes it amazingly easy to switch from one color to another and the electronic controls are a great addition. Straight stiching is very quiet, and even embroidery isn't that loud. The only caveat is that you can't add designs directly, but with the purchase of a SmartBox you can download them free or economically from websites and save the $60 or $80 Brother charges for expansion cards. All in all this is a fantastic machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars great little machine, January 17, 2006

I've had this machine appox. 3 months, really do like it, had to sent it back for some more"reconditioning",it had a habit of shutting off in middle of embroderdering, lost two projects. It will use Amazing Designs,OESD,White and all Brother and Disney cards. If you look on the internet you can find cards in your price range.I might add I have a couple Singer embroidery machine, but this opens up a wider range of possibilites,as I really like to embroider and sew.I do highly recommend this little Brother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great machine!, December 31, 2006

I received this machine as a birthday present a few months ago. Wow! How machines have come along since the old Singer machine that I used to use!

The machine in general - threading the needle couldn't be easier, you slide in the cartridge and it does the rest for you! It has a foot pedal, but it also has a button on the front of the machine that works the same way if, like me, you are not so talented with the foot work! The machine is lightweight enough to enable you to move it around easily, but heavy enough to be sturdy and sound. The touch screen is fairly easy to use, and it even includes a help section, in case you should get stuck and don't want to go back to the manual. Overall, it has all the features of older machines, plus some, without being too complicated that you daren't use it!

It has quite a few Brother embroidery designs and fonts built in, as well as several Disney character designs. All of these are fascinating to watch as it does it's work and, when finished, they look very professional.

The machine has a slot for cards that you can buy with further embroidery fonts and designs. Basically, you slot it in and they appear as options on the screen. I haven't yet bought any of these, but I've seen them around.

It also has the capability to accept your own designs... for this you will need to buy a card reader and software. The card reader isn't terribly expensive - about $100, I think - but the software, if you want the latest release, will set you back around $700! My husband cheated on this and managed to buy the version before the latest release at a much reduced cost. I find that this version does all I need it to do, and I will upgrade when the new version becomes outdated following another release.

I have been extremely happy with this machine. I am not an experienced machinist, but it enables me to do so much without overwhelming me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cautiously optimistic, May 27, 2007

I will be the first to tell you that I am no seamstress. Over the years I have had several machines, the first a gift from my mother, who was convinced that if only I had a sewing machine of my own, I would learn to enjoy sewing. (I traded it to my sister for a typewriter.) Thanks Mom. My second was given to me by my in-laws after I told them that I did not sew. They also gave me a large set of dish towels after I told them I do not dry dishes. Hmmm.

I bought this machine myself about a month ago, having been seduced by beautifully choreographed quilts and the incredible array of fabrics available with which to paint. I do not care for Disney and I do not intend to embroider anything, certainly not mouse ears. I cannot even imagine how I would use all of the programmed stitches. But I love the way this machine threads itself, cuts its own thread, sews a straight line, switches from one stitch to the other. I like the precision it offers, so that I can place my stitches with meticulous accuracy. In the past, sewing has invariably cost me peace and tranquility for the remains of the day, what with tension issues (both mine and its own) and horrible snarls on the undersides of things. But up in my cubby hole with the view of the lake and the Chugach mountains, on a table where the lighting is good, this machine has been sweetly responsive and even enthusiastic about my projects. As for me, I have finished my first quilt.

I love this machine! I've not sewn for years and this was just the ticket to get me excited about it all over again. It's been so much fun playing with all the embroidery designs and trying out different approaches. It's probably not a "beginner" machine but with a little practice, you can sew like a pro. It does everything but walk the dog!

I just received this model (a factory reconditioned one) for Christmas. It has exceeded my expectations on ease of use. It's replacing a mechanical sewing machine that was increasingly more frustrating to use--this one is a breeze! The only thing that would make this a perfect machine is if Brother included with the sewing machine PE-Design Basic. Although 70 designs is a lot, we still need to download designs that are not included (fairies and butterflies). Having PE-Design and a card writer would make this a much better deal.

I come from a LONG line of seamstresses. Both my great grandmothers, both grandmothers, and my mother were & are most excellent seamstresses. My grandmother and mother have an online business using their talent. I, however, couldn't sew a straight stich, much less THREAD a sewing machine. I had another singer sewing machine and I pretty much made stitches that look like wads of hair. But I desparately wanted to learn to sew. So I thought I would just buy another machine because the other one I had was older.

I was searching for the perfect machine. And well this one was the one I HAD to have! I loved the features and I figured between Mom and Mammaw I could learn it. When I first took it out of the box I sat right there and threaded it. Within about 5 minutes! Right after I threaded it I practiced a few stitches. THEY WERE STRAIGHT!!! I was immediately hooked!

Within a week I had made and embellished an outfit that I SOLD on a popular auction site! The lady LOVED it! Since then I've been sewing like I'm outta control! And it's good too! Mom was impressed! So was my husband, who just knew I wouldn't use it! LOL!!!

If you're wanting to learn to sew then this one's the one you want! The pedal is easy to control so you wont have to worry about running away with the stitches. It also has three sewing speeds, which REALLY helps a beginner. Threading it is sooooo easy, as well as winding the bobbin. Another great feature is the embroidery features. You can even buy different embroidery pattern cartridges. It's all digital. I am so impressed with my machine and if it ever breaks, I will buy another one just like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Sweet Home, September 9, 2007
This review is from: Brother SE270D Computerized Sewing and Embroidery Machine (Kitchen)
I must admit, I was a bit skeptical of this magical little do all machine. I bought this for my wife as she has been in the need of a new sewing machine for a long time. When the package came we excitedly removed the machine from its shipping box and hooked it all up. We got it all up and running (okay she got it running)and quickly was able to create a new bobbin. Then set the threading up. That part was awesome. Talk about "even a man can do it with out screwing up". I thought it was real cool. We attached the embroidery unit. Of course we did have one small mishap. That is what I call the Man Phase. Yes I wanted to see this machine spit out Mickey so I got some material and let it go. Only one problem...I forgot to change the foot. It worked...just wasnt to pretty! I know...if men would just read the instructions!

All in all, this machine has been awesome! My wife has already made a set of curtains and started monogramming like crazy. We have for boys so you can imagine the disney embroidery cards we have to get. And yes they each like different things. Thats going to get expensive! I would suggest that you purchase the Software kit that comes with a flash card and flash writer. You can get various levels of the software. We got the pro edition and we are going to have a go at creating some custom designs. All in all...this machine was absolutely great from the get go. And that comes from a man with limited sewing knowledge. This machine is absolutely "Man" friendly!
