Dealing with the Troubling Low Yields,
By
This review is from: Brother TN-115Y High Yield Yellow Toner Cartridge Compatible with Brother HL-4040CN, HL-4070CDW Series (Office Product)
Yes, these Brother toners do only count the number of pages printed to determine the amount of toner left. When one of the CMY color runs out, they all run out at the same time. Even though the printer may say its completely out of toner, that might not be the case always. To reset the toner (if you know there's ample amount of toner still left), unscrew the two screws on the side, pop off the side cover, and turn the gray gear wheal counterclockwise 90 degrees.

Brother color printers are set to 'run out' of toner after a set number of color pages printed. So there is often plenty of toner left in the cartridge.
To reset the 9440cn printer, turn the printer on and open the toner access main door. You get a 'door open' message on the LCD. Press Clear/Back and you get the toner reset menu. You can then reset the carts by hand using the up/down arrows and the 1 key to select reset. At the end the printer will report all the carts as full. You can then replace them when they are empty, not when it suits the planned obsolescence dept.

The toner cartridges for the Brother 4070cdw work very well, there were no issues for the ease of use and consistancy or quality. the only negitive to report is the number of copies expected from there advertising versis the number of actual was very low about 50% of the expected. many conditions may have caused this but in a nutshell there could be much more toner in these cartridges for the cost of each. they are great products but at a cost per copy that is much to high in comparison to others.

These toners are easy to install. One thing though, after the first warning of these toners being low I take them out and check the little round window to see if there is still toner. If there is, I wind back the gear with a peg on it back to its original position. I recently did this with all three colors as it was reported they were going low. After winding back the gears, the printer performed perfectly for another month with a moderate amount of color printing. Finally, the low toner warnings went off again and since there appeared no more toner, I installed new ones. I have a closet full of these consumables and look forward to many great years printing with these printers. (We have 6 of them)
*EDIT 12/20/10* We've 3 more of these printers now. Here is something important you should know along with the above information: Hidden Menus **Toner Reset Menu - Open front door of printer. Press the 'clear' button once or twice. There are two capacities for each color. It will start counting down from whichever you choose. **Everything Else Reset Menu - Press '3' and '9' at the same time. Hidden reset menu will appear. Select item, select reset.

I have the Brother HL-4040CDN which uses the TN110 or TN115 hi yield. The following information is gleaned from google searches for remanufacturing the two types of cartridges.
The rated yields for North American market is 110 black, 2500 pages, 110 color 1500 pages, 115 K 5000 pages, 115 color 4000 pages. To keep the density of the color constant over the life of the cartridge, the printer starts out with a hi voltage bias and gradually reduces it as determined by the number of drum revolutions. The low life cartridge has a gear with one rib which revolves over 1500 pages and the hi life cartridge has a gear with two ribs. When a new cartridge is inserted a gear pushes up and resets the drum bias voltage to high. Various available pictures clearly show what gears one needs to reset to the bias to high to continues printing from the partly used cartridge. The color toners should run out together only if they had been installed at the same time. I did not play around with resetting the gear on my original lo yield cartridges, but I will try that with the hi yield cartridges. Since it affects the bias voltage, we shall see if it makes any difference in the color tonality. However, for my purposes, I use inkjet printers for my "serious" color photography prints. I am very satisfied with this printer/toner in my home office and general printing. This printer does not use a chip to keep track of the usage and does not have a clear/back drum reset mentioned in a comment for a different model.

It is sooo yellow and if you are thinking it is purple, you are high. Good toner cartridge, shipped free, received quickly. I should be praising amazon for this item, instead of brother.

These OEM toner cartridges work perfectly, but they typically claim to be empty of toner when in fact they are less than 1/3 empty. Search on Google to learn how to reset them, which involves taking off a cover plate and rotating a gear. Perfect otherwise. Brother, QUIT RIPPING US OFF!

We own a small consulting and benefit brokering business. We create a lot of printed documents, manuals, forms and presentations for our clients. For the past three years we have primarily used our Brother MCF 9840CDW. Trying to save expenses we have purchased several OEM cartridges. They are not worth any savings. They leak or don't last anywhere as long as the Brother. Stick with the originals. Consistency and quality are worth the extra dollars. Genuine Brother cartridges are excellent quality. Once the pouch is opened, though, they begin to dry out. (Brother has some recommendation for how long to use them before you get new ones. I don't remember what it is. Call them if you want to know.) If you buy genuine Brother cartridges, and find that eventually the colors become less vivid, to the point that you decide to buy a new, fresher cartridge, you may want to switch to the cheaper, lower-capacity, TN110 cartridges. But as long as you're perfectly happy with the quality of your color, you'll want to buy the higher-capacity TN115 cartridges, which are cheaper per page printed. (They cost roughly twice as much, and give you roughly three times as many pages, depending on color.)
Whichever size you get, you will find that the Brother printers decide after a certain number of pages that you've printed enough with that cartridge, and it's all used up. You may well want to use a cartridge after the printer's page counter says it's time to change it. This is *particularly* true if you mostly print text, or text plus a limited number of pictures. (Do you really cover 5% of each page with each color? I doubt it.) To reset the pages-since-cartridge-was-last-replaced counter in your Brother HL-4070CDW, you must first open the front of the printer. (You will see the drawer which holds the cartridges.) Leaving the front of the printer open, press and hold the "Cancel" button. While holding the "Cancel" button, press and release the "Reprint" button. Then release the "Cancel" button. The display should now say "Reset Parts Life" on the first line, and "B.TNR-S" on the second line. Use the up and down arrows to display the cartridge you want to reset in the second line: B means a black cartridge, C means cyan, M means magenta, and Y means yellow. S means the lower-yield cartridge size (TN110), and H the higher-yield (TN115). When you get to the cartridge you want to reset, press the OK button. (I've seen the recommendation that you then press the "Cancel" button to exit the menu, but I've never found that necessary.) Then close the front of the printer. That's it! Other Brother printers may use a different procedure (such as a different combination of buttons to press). Search the Internet if the above procedure doesn't work for your model. The counters are not the only reason the HL-4070CDW might decide that you're out of toner. Search the Internet if the above procedure doesn't work. (For example, when you really *are*, finally, running low on toner, you can supposedly get some additional pages by putting electrical tape over the transparent window in the side of the cartridge. There are also rumors that there is a gear you should turn back.) The counter reset procedure will usually get you going, though. Hint: If resetting the counter doesn't do it, it's time to buy another cartridge, even if alternate procedures do get you going again. That way, you won't have any downtime when you really *do* run out of toner. (As long as you don't open the pouch before it's time to install it, the cartridge should not age significantly while sitting on your shelf.) But remember, these cartridges eventually dry out while in the printer, leading to less vivid colors. So eventually you may want to buy a new cartridge, anyway.

Although the photo shows an original Brother box, what I received was not. They sent something that said it was "Premium" toner manufactured in a "certified" plant. The seller definitely misrepresented the product.
