I bought a Singer from Costco, and never really used it for 3 years. Took a sewing class and started to use it continuously and it started to run by itself. I googled it and found that it was a common fault with this machine. Also said repairing it only temporarily fixed it. Frustrated I took it back to Costco and they happily refunded me , I went and bought this Brother XR1355 $ 169.99 and so far I love it, a lot easier to use, especially loading the bobbin and thread ! I am taking a sewing class and truly enjoyed using my new machine . Not one problem so far and have done 5 projects with not a single problem. Not only do I love this machine , I love Costco for standing by their refund policy with no questions asked. thank you Costco.

I bought this machine in December 2013 and kept the box incase I was not satisfied and wanted to return it to Costco where I had purchased it on sale for less than $140.00. I donated my old Singer machine to the local Animal Shelter....nothing wrong with it but the difference between my new machine and it is like night and day.
I absolutely love sewing on this machine and take it to a girlfriend's when we sew together despite her insisting I use one of her older Janome machines. When I did I got so frustrated with the older machine and have taken mine ever since.
I love its light weight since I transport it at least once a week to various sewing activities. The ease of filling a bobbin, threading, changing the various pressure feet, choosing a stitch pattern and size make it a delight. I use to dread rethreading and filling bobbins on my old machine.
The option to use either the foot paddle or hand sewing control makes it versatile enough for my 8 year old grand-daughter to use since her legs are too short to use the foot paddle and I am too old to change from using a foot paddle to the hand control. I was amazed at how easy it was for her to sew a jelly roll strip quilt for her dolls with very little instructions and demonstration from me. Just by watching me once she could change the pressure foot and re-thread. With the use of a ¼ inch quilting pressure foot, her stitches were straight. Wish the machine came with that foot.
This is one purchase that I have made in my life time that did not disappoint, and I have had plenty of disappointments in purchases. I am now shopping for an embroidery/sewing machine and will stick with the Brothers brand. I have learned from this buying experience that you don't have to buy the most expensive, top of the line product to be a hundred percent satisfied.
The accompanying DVD was a big bonus since I hate reading an instruction manual.

I'm giving this machine five stars (so far - if anything changes, I'll modify). I have been sewing for 20 years on a mechanical Necchi machine. I finally got frustrated and decided that it's not me, it's the machine.

I researched a LOT and went and tried some expensive machines at Joannes and Nuttals. (but I"m not in it for $800+) So, because I had a personal recommendation and because of Costco's return policy, I decided on this one.

I love the variety of stitches. I love the computerized foot recommendations and stitch length and size recommendations. I love the extended working tray thing - amazing! My favorite feature so far is the pedal-free sewing! I'm a little short, so to sit in a position with my foot at the ready can really wear on my back and leg - seriously, this feature is awesome! Also, the feed dogs are so straight! the machine is pretty quiet, the speed control is awesome (and the stitches remain even despite the speed).

I like the letters too! You can program in about 30 (I think) characters. I recommend trying it on scrap before putting your project under the needle - it will hold the programmed letters forever until you want to delete them to do something different. I say this, because you can easily mistake the number code for a different letter and misspell your words! Also, once you label something with words, it's okay to trim the little threads connecting the letters to make it easier to see the letters, they're all reinforced!

I have been learning with lots of new feet (overlock foot is fabulous!) and the button hole foot is great- no measuring the button, just place the button in the foot, and align the project and push a button! The old machine required four steps, and it was an art form I could never master.

This machine is great!! It definitely met my expectations. When I received it, the first thing I did was try EVERY stitch mode.
The only downside is, if you are really into monogramming, the letter size is 1/4" which is only good for patches/labels, not for major monogramming. For my use, it is everything I could possibly need. I have recommended it to everyone that asks my opinion of a machine.

Learned to sew a little from my mother about 50 years ago, but haven't owned a sewing machine since. Bought this one and took a sewing class. Everyone liked it so much that by the end of the class, there were three of them! Very easy to learn to set up (watch the DVD) and to operate. It does jam if you try to start sewing too close to the edge of the fabric, but all machines do this.

One small quibble is that if something goes wrong, it give you an error code you need to look up, or just check to make sure everything is set up correctly.

Have done a few small projects at home with it and look forward to learning more. Taking a quilting class soon and then the advanced sewing class.

Update: After using this machine for a quilting class, I can say that while it does work, for thicker material with batting, feeding is sometimes a little iffy, resulting in uneven stitches. Buying a walking foot helps, but adds significantly to your cost. The SA125 quarter inch piecing foot makes keeping 1/4" seam margins fairly easy. The throat is only about 6", so rolling a large quilt to the right of the needle is difficult, but it can be done, assuming your quilt is not too large or thick.

Please note that the machines from Costco come with a 25 year limited parts warranty. It does not appear to cover labor. Our local Brother service center charges $139 to service an out of warranty machine. Fortunately, Costco offers a generous exchange policy, so we were able to exchange the machine (XR1300, about 2 years old) for a newer model (XR1355).
