Editorial Reviews

Romulus (Peter Strauss) and Remus (David Morse) are two CIA Operatives, their superior and instructor is John Elliott (Robert Mitchum) . They both were picked up at an orphanage by John Elliott at the age of eight, raised together as brothers and specially trained to supersede every other agent in the service. This is what they know. What they do not know is that they are part of a system that John Elliott had invented to build up his own private army of professional assassins which can be assigned to any job he wishes. One day Romulus takes over a job in the course of which he and his team blow up a house and about half a dozen civilians with it. After that Romulus feels he is being chased by the CIA and the Mossad. He discovers that John Elliott betrayed both him and Remus right from the start...

4.0 out of 5 stars I'm no Spook(Spy), but this looked and felt REAL! August 6, 1999
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
I not a spy in real life, but I saw one on my TV. This mini-series seemed to have all the details just right. It felt like the real world. Their were consequences for every action, and the action was realistic, therefore believable. And the Spycraft, I believe was real. Peter Struass is now one of my favorite actors. If you are someone who wants to see movies about spies that aren't full of cliches, this one is for you. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is that the production had a few burps in the audio. Some of the post production looping(re-recording dialog that was not captured well on location) was not as good as it could have been. Despite the small audio burps, this is a GREAT mini-series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie! May 28, 2003
Format:VHS Tape
I really hope that sometime soon they release this on DVD. The book by David Morrell "The Brotherhood Of The Rose" is my favorite book of all-time. As we all know, most adaptations of books don't go so well. This is a rare exception. This adaptation is 99% accurate. A change here or there, especially the ending, but still a great job. Read the book, then watch the movie...and then realize that I was right! ENJOY!

3.0 out of 5 stars TV espionage August 17, 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Dating from 1989, Brotherhood of the Rose was a TV miniseries about international espionage. Unlike many spy dramas, the plot is not particularly convoluted, but is actually quite straightforward. Running about three hours, the story centers on agent who carries out an assassination, but soon comes to realize that he has been set up. Teaming up with his part-time girlfriend and long-time partner, he discovers an international conspiracy involving several intelligence agencies. Filmed almost entirely in New Zealand, the cold, rainy landscapes reinforce the sense of bleakness and desolation in the protagonist's mind. The main problem is that the drama is very slow moving in places. This version has not been extensively re-edited, and still incorporates the logos shown between advertising breaks, which unfortunately tends to break up the continuity.

Brotherhood of the Rose was and is a spell-binder from start to finish. I did manage several years ago to get a DVD but so many things were deleted [reducing it to less than two hours, that it had lost most of its punch. Since this is the FULL version, sit back and have your feelings and interest stirred from beginning to end. I have talked about this movie to many of my friends, but not knowing the full movies had been released until last Thursday, I had expressed "Too bad the full movie is not available." I will NOW make the discussion of this movie a priority. You'll love it! It gives a world perspective to the spy industry. I give this movie a 5 STAR RATING. DON'T MISS SEEING IT. I still have a copy of this movie on VHS. I have not been willing to loan out of fear that it would be lost or damaged. I am ordering today the DVD!

I love this mini-series. I liked the book even better. Some other reviewers said they had a problem viewing the DVD, but I did not have a problem with that. I strongly recommend this DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hell of a book! Hell of a movie! February 24, 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
I saw this film 20 or so years ago. Been searching for this including the local library, no luck. Saw it on Amazon, ordered it right away! Bought the book 3 times, 3 times borrowed and none ever returned. I haven't received it yet as of this writing but I already know what to expect. My son is reading the book right now (from the library) and this going to be a surprise present for him. Only wishing the copy arrives perfect.
