This soundtrack is one of my favorites. The music can be both dark and powerful or sad and delicate. The use of so many different instruments ads to the mysterious combination that can take one back to the times of the haunting beast in the French forests. Track 3 was touching and beautiful. There can be heard many eastern influences on the cd, where we can hear the raw power of the battle between good and evil. As a soundtrack collector i deeply recommentd it. Its a very mysterious and haunting cd.

Whoa! This soundtrack is really something. A definite must have. Joe LoDuca has created a wonderful and thematic score for the absolute BEST film of 2001. Although the main theme isn't used enough it comes thru best in tracks 3,4,20 and 21(Once).
Many of the other tracks either evoke a bizarre Danny Elfman style (Track 5) or are atmospheric, tension tracks used in scenes of mystery. It is in these, basically empty, tracks that the CD fails but they are bearable whenever the secondary theme kicks in. This CD is hardly ever out of my player and if you are a fan of the movie or even if you just love great music then this is for you.

Saw the movie and was blown away by the score. As a fan of LoDuca's work on Xena and Hercules I thought it sounded very much like his work and then the credits rolled and I saw it was him!Very beautiful and Joeseph LoDuca at his best for this fabulous film that is like seeing one of the fairy tales of old come to life. And I don't mean the children's versions so many of us are used to. Dark and dangerous, beautiful and horrifying Jospeh LoDuca conveys all of this and does it with originality and great talent. I hope now that Herc and Xena are done we will hear more of his work in films.

The film was beautiful. The soundtrack complimented the artistry of the scenes and frankly, drove the movie. Being a fan of both Xena and Hercules, I picked up on similarities with certain notes, certain ways the music played with the scene before knowing who did the score. And there is additional theme through some of pieces which also appealed to me; in some place I am reminded of Clint Eastwood's "spaghetti" westerns as I'm listen to the score, especially in the lead track "The Grey Wolf"A must have CD! And when the film comes out on DVD, get that too :-)

Don't overlook this soundtrack! I have not seen the movie, but I found the soundtrack to be quite amazing. The composer has used an arsenal of sounds to create tension and anticipation. It is not a big theme song soundtrack, but rather one full of driving beats and exploration. Towards the end there are some very dark arrangements which set this soundtrack apart from others. I wasn't totally sold on the use of guitar distortion on some of the tracks. Perhaps it needed some assistance from another rock instrument. It sounded somewhat naked or alone against the other sounds being used. Track 3 is a standout. At the moment, Virgin's site does provide sound samples.

Why to buy it,
This review is from: Brotherhood of the Wolf (Audio CD)
tracks 1,2,3,4,6,11,and 20 seem to be the only unique tracks of this film score. All the rest build up suspense and create the surrounding. However... these tracks were very good and track 2 never fails to get me back into the movie with Mani's takin everyone out. Track 1 can be heard in the beginning of one of the trailers and I think it should have been used more as a background theme. Instead Joseph choose the theme that can be heard in track 3, 4, and 20. Track 6 is a pure precussion with phiffe(spelling?) piece that my sister irish step danced to. And 11 demonstrates the indian tabla(spelling again?) to an memorable rhythm.

OK, I just listened to this album three times in a row yesterday (constitution of a bullock don't ya know) and then again this morning just to make sure. And as I did I was reminded of a mate of mine who once pointed out that in some ways you weren't really supposed to notice the music in a film. That's a fair point but darn it I love movie soundtracks especially if they are 'proper' ones and not collections of pop tunes 'from and inspired by' if you get my drift.
The situation with this soundtrack to the Christophe Gans period/drama/action flick is that in some parts of the film the music really is just wallpaper. In other parts however it's all but a character in it's own right. And that means that many of the tracks on this disc are fairly brief, just snippets really, that in the film might have been poignant yet taken out of context don't have the length/depth to really stand alone as music. Also, the aural wallpaper sections will scoot by without you even being able to remember them and then, after a while, you hit a part of the music that IS highly evocative and takes you straight to some awesome part of the film. As such this is an uneven listen. There are gorgeous parts but also weird little fills. And it's not just me - I picked up a copy for my brother for christmas as he also loves the film and he specifically rang me while listening to it to tell me how strange some of it sounded out of the context of the film. If you loved the film just ignore me and pick this CD up. It's in chronological order and includes the beautiful song Once along with full credits and some perfunctory liner notes. Just don't pay a stacks of your hard earned.

The soundtrack was just as beautiful as the visuals of the movie itself. I wish I could find the words to describe it besides etheral, haunting, driven all when & where it needed to be, of course you'd have to see the movie to experience score, I did, which is why I'm buying the score/soundtrack asap. This probably sn't much of a review to go on, but, if you are a fan of movie scores , then add this to your collection. I have.

A striking, eclectic soundtrack for a striking, eclectic movie!,

In the movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf," an American scientist and his Iroqouis sidekick fight like oriental martial artists in pre-revolutionary France while they track a giant, wolf-like monster ... Who would ever have suspected? And who better to compose a soundtrack for this cool if confusing montage of cultures and genres than Joseph LoDuca, who so ably accomplished similar feats for the Hercules and Xena TV series of the 1990s. His ability to write engaging, memorable themes and then weave them in amongst an evocatively eclectic mix of musical influences has made Joe LoDuca one of my favorite soundtrack composers, and I can often recognize his work just by the sound of it. He's all over the world map here, but so is the movie, so it all works out. The music for the horror scenes is creepy and suspenseful, the action sequences are full of explosive world percussion, and I especially like his affecting, guitar-based themes for the hero and the love story (OK, the superficial infatuation story that doesn't really amount to much within the larger context of the story, but who's keeping track? It's not that kind of movie.). "Brotherhood of the Wolf" needed a great soundtrack to make itself semi-believable and tie everything together. It got one, and it's great!

Spellbound... I think this is the only word that could describe the way I feel when I listen to this soundtrack... My favourite tracks are 1 , 4 ,5 and 21 - "Once", of course. They make me feel free, feel just the way I really am... a dreamer.Don't forget to dream ... as often as you can! |
