Average album, not bad but not worth buying,
By Dan Yeager (Philadelphia, PA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brothers From Another (Audio CD)
The Young Gunz' "Brothers From Another" is a really average and forgettable release. There's nothing overly bad about it, but there are few tracks to begin with (only 12), and few of those are worth repeats...so it'll probably drift away in your CD collection too quickly.
The production is very simple and sparse throughout, with a few "party" beats here and there. The only real exception is the track "Grown Man Pt. 2", which is produced by Kanye West and is surprisingly a really poor beat. It's horribly overproduced -- too much stuff is going on, all the sounds clash with each other, and you can't really get into the beat at all. I don't know if everyone is just brainwashed into automatically liking a Kanye song nowadays, but it doesn't work at all. The rest of the beats are decent but unspectacular, and the only other big-name producer is Swizz Beatz on "Set it Off". Lyrically, you probably know what to expect from the Young Gunz (Chris and Neef). They're not the best rappers in the world but Chris especially can spit some really solid verses with a nice flow. I'd compare him to somewhat of a less talented Jadakiss. They cover all the typical stuff, partying / street life...again, what you'd expect from a mainstream rap release in 2005. Nothing that creative or extraordinary. The standout tracks in my opinion are the lead single "Set it Off" (produced by Swizz Beatz), "Tonight", "Beef", and "What We Gotta Do". "Set it Off" is incredibly catchy, and Chris and Neef both drop awesome verses to the beat. "Tonight" is a great, west-coast style party track featuring Daz with a strong beat and hook. "Beef" and "What We Gotta Do" are both far more serious/mature tracks and give a great edge to the album. Overall the first half of "Brothers From Another" is made up of party tracks and singles, and the second half are deeper and more serious songs. Neither side is perfect but the latter works better. Aside from "Grown Man Pt. 2" none of the songs struck me as really poor, but a lot are forgettable. I bought this album because I was completely hooked on "Set it Off", but I'm a little disappointed. It's not a horrible album but it's just not really worth the $10-$15. Just find out which tracks you like and get them from a friend / online service.

2nd major label release is alright,

15 months after their debut on a major label (and 5 months after their "G.I.F.I. Mixtape") Young Chris & Neef return. Not nearly as good as "Tough Luv" and slightly worse then "G.I.F.I. Mixtape" it is still pretty good. Only 12 songs and 43 minutes so it's not as long as the other 2. 1 song is horrible, 2 are almost classics, 3 are ok, the other 6 are good. Production is not as good as the debut (oddly since it's mostly the same producers) and also Neef lacks lyrically once again. Chad Hamilton does 7 songs, Swizz Beats does 2, and Boola, Bangladesh, and Kanye West all do 1. Guests rap on about half the songs and a few hooks are from otehrs. A good album for their fans to have but not their best work.

Different album, Same Sh*t!!!,

from seeing the album cover I expected the Brothers From Another to be waaaayyyy better then what I heard. I almost fell asleep listening to it the first time. The later part of the album is what made me not throw the cd away, starting with grown men pt 2 and on. MAN... I thought they were going to really do it from the sparkles I heard here and there from TOUGH LUV. I ain't given up on them though... but they need to stop trying to be hard and make music with a purpose...grow up again.

Tough Luv It Isn't (2.5 Stars),

Straight to the point: the album is pretty forgettable. Though it's pretty average, Brothers From Another has too many holes in it for me to give it three stars. "Tonight" has a guest appearance from the usually reliable Daz, but even he couldn't save that song from being pretty boring. "Don't Stop (YG Party)" shouldn't be played while operating heavy machinery, and "Same Sh*t, Different Day" is just plain awful.
There are a few strong cuts though. "Grown Man Pt. II" is assisted by Kanye West & John Legend. Kanye does a good job on the production. "Don't Keep Me Waiting (Come Back Soon)" is a nice joint for the ladies, but their hardcore fans may pass on it. "What We Gotta Do" is pretty introspective and is one of the best tracks on the album. "Beef" is solid, but it suffers from a lack of lyrical improvement. "Set It Off" is decent at best, but it's still listenable. Brothers From Another is pretty weak. Chris and 'Neef haven't improved any on their lyrical scheme. The Tough Luv album masked its weaknesses with tight production. This time around, the production takes a huge step backward and ultimately puts a glaring spotlight on their inabilities. There are too many lame hooks and weak lyrics. I'd only reccomend this album to die hard Roc fans. Everyone else should leave this one on the shelf. Standout Tracks: Beef, Set It Off feat. Swizz Beats, Don't Keep Me Waiting (Come Back Soon) feat. 112, Grown Man Pt. II feat. Kanye West & John Legend, and What We Gotta Do(My Favorite)

a bit disappointed,

First off let me go ahead and let you all know that i am a big-time gunna fan, but in the same breath i have to be truthful and say that this album was a disappiontment. For one this the album only had 12 tracks and you would think that those 12 tracks would be straight fire. The production was very sub par, Tough Luvs production was ten times better than this one. They didn't come hard enouhg unfortunately. I gotta give it a 5/10. Tough Luv was such a good album to me and i still listen to that album on the regular, and i was expecting so much more and i was left without being satified cus i hyped this album so much.

A year and a couple months after dropping their debut album "Tough Luv", the Young Gunz are back with their follow-up, "Brothers from Another." As part of the new Roc Army, the Young Gunnerz are the second artist's to release an album under the new label.
1. The Knock Is There - Good beat, Chris and Neef spit good, hook is good - 4.5/5 2. Set It Off - 1st single, Good beat, Chris and Neef spit good, the hooks lyrics are pretty simple...but it still sounds good - 4/5 3. Don't Keep Me Waiting (Come Back Soon) (Featuring 112) - Great beat, Chris and Neef spit good, 112's hook is good - 4.5/5 4. Tonight (Featuring Daz Dillinger) - Great beat, everyone spits good, hook is great - 5/5 5. Don't Stop (YG Party) - Good beat, Chris and Neef spit good, hook isn't bad - 4.5/5 6. Same S*** Different Day - Alright beat, Chris and Neef spit good, hook is lame - 3/5 7. Grown Man, Pt. 2 (Featuring Kanye West & John Legend) - Good beat, everyone spits good, John Legends hook is good - 4.5/5 8. Beef - Good beat, Chris and Neef spit hard, hook is alright - 4/5 9. It's The Life (Featuring Pooda Brown) - Good beat, everyone spits good, hook is good - 4/5 10. The Way It Goes (Featuring Pooda Brown) - Great beat, everyone spits good, hook is great - 5/5 11. What We Gotta Do - Great beat, Chris and Neef both spit deep lyrics, hook is good - 4.5/5 12. We Still Here (Featuring Memphis Bleek) - Great beat, everyone spits hard, hook is alright - 4/5 Overall: 51.5/60 4 Stars This album is a pretty solid effort from Young Chris and Neef. There could have been a lot more tracks on the album and most of the songs could have been longer as well. But for the most part, so far the new ROC Army is coming off strong!

Expected a lot more...,

After listening to a copy of Tough Luv that a friend had given me, I was anxiously awaiting this cd. It came out the same day as Common's, so I picked them both up. Man, I was dissapointed. This cd definitely has its high points. Set It off, The Roc is Here, Don't Keep Me Waiting, and Party Tonight are all great songs. However, the production is very sprawling and the ryhmes aren't always the greatest. The cd sounds a lot like a mixtape, and could have been a lot better. I would recommend this if you liked Tough Luv and want to see a different side of the Young Gunz, but other than that, stick with Tough Luv.

This cd is good. But not amazing. A few good songs here and their. Its kinda like a mixtape with the little chorus'. If you are a fan of Young Gunz then get this album. If you are a fan of Mobb Deep, Memphis Bleek, Common or Nas then u should also get this album.

This CD was great. It's short because the Roc has started over. I am glad to see that the ROC can put out good albums after the split. Many people don't recognize their "Death of a Dynasty". Go check out the moive. Maybe you will appreciate them still putting albums out non stop.
