5.0 out of 5 stars Heads-up! Buy the DVD/CD Combo Instead!
Great concert by the Robinson Brothers, but I wanted to let Amazon customers know that there is a DVD/CD combo over in the DVD section (same title: "Brothers of a Feather") that is selling for cheap. Same CD as this listing, but you get the DVD too and with more tracks. Great deal!

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmm ... not so much
I'm a Crowes fan, but don't like this one. I guess I miss the searing guitars and riffs. Looking forward to "Warpaint" in March.

I usually don`t take the time to review something for a site like this, as many others usually do a good job........but I have to write about this masterpiece........

Nowhere else today can you find music being made with this much devotion & realness, I could go on with track by track analysis, but there is no need here.......if your`re borderline on buying this cd....do not hesitate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful music!, August 7, 2007

This review is from: Brothers of a Feather (Audio CD)
I just got this CD from a friend of mine, and having not been familiar with the Robinson brothers or Black Crowes, I didn't really know what to expect. From the first song forward, I was mesmerized - this music is incredibly real, incredibly candid, and incredibly soulful. I'm not sure whether to call it rock, blues, folk, or a mix thereof, but it's as intimate as music gets - just two guys with guitars and some backup singers, no effects, no gimmicks, no pretenses. Chris and Rich Robinson made excellent music here. In certain points of certain songs, they so reminded me of classic Led Zeppelin sound - the singing of Robert Plant and the guitar of Jimmy Page - and yet, they have a style here that's distinctly their own. This is a truly superb work, and I recommend any blues, rock, and folk fans to check this album out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Documenting the True Tour Of Brotherly Love, August 16, 2007
This review is from: Brothers of a Feather (Audio CD)
While they have a history of discord, lately the Robinson brothers seem to have found harmony which is evident on this album recorded during one of their duo-tours. Out of the band context the choice Black Crowes tracks here highlight the strenght of that material, while the stripped down instrumental backing enables Chris to focus on singing to his best ability rather than struggling to be heard over a fullblast rock'n'roll band. Chris joins his brother Rich on guitar for some songs, but mainly it's the younger Robinson who provides six string magic here. Listening the acoustic dexterity of the extended Thorn In My Pride it's impossible to deny his virtuosity.
While there is nothing lack-daisical here, BOAF is a sideproject, as the new made-for-the Black Crowes-songs featured here (Cold Boy Smile, Magic Rooster Blues) attest. Still the great performances, new look on some gems from their solo projects, and the typically broad spectrum of cover material make this an essential purchase to even a casual Black Crowes-fan, and should please fans of Americana to no end.

With the brothers cooperating enough to make music, things always cook. I was expecting something more stripped down, there are backing singers and some very electric sounds, but that doesn't detract from the fact that this is a fresh look at Crows music. If your a fan this will be enjoyable, if you're not, its still a well done disc of live music by the brothers Robinson.Id still like to hear Chris and Rich with folk guitars on a quiet sound stage alone, but this will suffice for now.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Either One of the Robinson Brothers Have Done Since The Black Crowes, October 4, 2007
This review is from: Brothers of a Feather (Audio CD)
If your a fan of the Black Crowes or just good old rock and blues music this album is for you. It's nice to hear the brothers back together again and they sound great. There is only one Black Crowes song on the album, "Thorn In My Pride" but the rest is in the same vain and right where the band left off, with one exception: there is no band. It's just the two brothers and some back ground singers. There is only guitar and vocals, no bass or drums. It must have been a very intimate performance because that's how the album comes off. It's relaxed and mellow. It's still has all the edge of the Black Crowes though, which I know sound contradictory but pick up the album and you'll see what I'm talking about. The new songs sound great, the solo project songs from both Rich and Chris sound better than they did on their solo records. To boot there are some really cool covers also, like songs by Tom Rush and Gene Clark. A great eclectic album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Robinsons still capable of surprises!, May 23, 2010

Birds of a feather gets better with every listening. Chris Robinson's vocals can often verge on being irritating but when he gets it right they soar with a gritty, soulful resonance - reminding me of early Steve Marriott. Rich Robinson's guitar playing is both effective and accomplished, without ever being overly flamboyant. The songs are the strongest aspect of the album. Both the originals and covers work really well together - with the exception of John Martyn's "Over the hill', which is a pale shadow of the original. Overall, an excellent live CD!

I first saw the Black Crowes when they opened for The Grateful Dead in the 90's. I fell in love with that unique raw southern, Chris wailing from his soul, rock. I am extremely glad I bought this CD. Every time I listen to it, I am amazed with Richs' gutair riffs. I always knew he was good. Now I consider him freckin awesome. No one can sing like Chris sings. He makes sure you always get your moneys worth. If you like the Crowes, then you will love this CD.
