5.0 out of 5 stars Sheds "Light" on the "Lumiere" Bros. & Melies
As a professor of French, I have over the past decade taught several courses on French cinema. Several times, I have shown this excellent documentary as the "opener" in the course. As a professor of French, I have over the past decade taught several courses on French cinema. Several times, I have shown this excellent documentary as the "opener" in the course. It is about the right length and gives a fairly thorough treatment not only of the Lumiere Brothers (whom most would actually credit with the invention of the moving picture) and the various aspects of moviemaking in the early days, but also of their contemporary, the fascinating magician/moviemaker, Georges Melies. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the history of film in general and of French film in particular.
