3.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
I'm always trying to figure out how men think, so I knew I had to read this book. Like the better-known Michael Baisden, July started off as a self-published writer, but this author is more polished.

The author tackles some weighty issues, animosity between Black men and women, interracial dating and stereotypes. I enjoyed the questions included at the end of each...

I should go to work for Mr. July OFFICIALLY because I have sold more of these books than a few!!!

I am preparing to become a marital & family therapist, and I have recommended this book to literally hundreds of women I talk to in chatrooms, on-line, at church, the girls I mentor, students, my sister... Any woman who is having man troubles and needs insight into the dating game, I recommend this book HIGHLY!

Mr. July's conversational style makes for an enjoyable read.

The thing that separates this book from the other relationship books that manipulate and play on women's fears about being alone is this: Mr. July not only exposes the games men play, but he also gives insight into the female rationale for staying with and repeating dysfunctional patterns with men they claim are the bane of their existance.

If you read this book with a heart to learn AND change, you will walk away a stronger, more enlightened woman.

Happy Reading, Sisters! :)

This was probably one of the best relationship books I ever read, and I'm not just referring to the fine brother on the cover(although that doesn't hurt!)Mr July is open and honest, even when the truth may hurt a little bit. Never condenscending, always entertaining. I wait with baited breath for his next book.I have gained new insight on men after reading this book, I guess you could say that it sort of restored my faith in men. Hey ladies, they have feelings too!

5.0 out of 5 stars FINALLY... REALITY!!!, July 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
Mr. July's personal experiences and revelations are as close as one could possibly get to the "truth in print" regarding the stereo-typing, daily struggles, and often-time confusing but heart-felt attempts to find love, from the perspective of an African-American male. "Brothers, Lust, and Love" is a two-fold read. Mr. July encourages a coming-together of the sexes... by way of defining the desires and fears of most African-American men in their daily lives and personal relationships... while seeking to instill and encourage a new wisdom and understanding from African-American women. Mr. July covers issues ranging from the sometimes awkward elevator ride (unacknowledged greeting) between the sexes... through understanding the emotionally detached "tin-man"... through color and/or complexion prejudices within the African-American community... through his personal quest for spirituality and love. A definite must-read for both sexes!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding learning tool for all men and women, June 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
After being a fan of both of Nathan McCall's book, I took the time to really enjoy reading Mr. July's work. About midway through the book, I wished I could have read it a few years ago because it would have saved me a lot of trouble. But, I'm putting the information to good us as I prepare to be married in a few months. I love the fact that this book is written in very simple term amd is not biased. Just when you thing Mr. July is about to take the brothers side, he comes right back. Many times it seems that the book was written for a woman, but when closing out the final chapter you know it is a book that you want to pass on to all your friends to reed. The problem with that is you would probably end up buying it again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple Honesty From a Black Male, February 6, 2004
By
"idgill" (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
This book was wonderful! Just simple honesty from a Black male. What made this book stand out was that there was no male or female bashing nor manipulation; just the truth from Mr. July's standpoint. This book is full of information to help you understand past and current relationships as well as to help you in your future. A true eye-opener, and discussion-starter.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, July 2, 2000
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
I'm always trying to figure out how men think, so I knew I had to read this book. Like the better-known Michael Baisden, July started off as a self-published writer, but this author is more polished.

The author tackles some weighty issues, animosity between Black men and women, interracial dating and stereotypes. I enjoyed the questions included at the end of each chapter to prompt discussion.

I really got a kick out his analysis of the lines that men use to approach women. Some of his categories are originality and "digitability." This part of the book interested me the most because I have certainly heard my share of weak lines. July even suggests some comebacks for the hisses, whistles and vulgarity that some of us are subjected to on a daily basis.

This is not a book that points the finger of blame soley at either sex. It simply lays out the landscape of the dating scene and shows how men and women sometimes relate (or fail to relate) to each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS GREAT! RECOMMENDED READING FOR MEN AND WOMEN!, May 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have ever read. William July sheds light on a wide variety of subjcts that effect all of us at one time or another. It will confirm a lot of things you may already know as well as enlightening you on things you may not have been sure about. It is a wake up call to those who are not in tune to the people in their lives. If definitely is a source of inner healing that can help you understand your soulmate and identify who he/she may be.

Willliam July-THANK YOU!

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and thought-provoking., January 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
This was an interesting book about the mind, soul and essence of a Black man. It was sensitively written and thought-provoking. It was a pleasure to read a book about a caring and loving Black man. However, I believe Mr. July is in the minority when it comes to being honest, loving & caring. This is good book for both men and women--it would make them think about what their lives are really about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty and brutaly honest view of relationships., January 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
In "Brothers...," Mr. July candidly and with great wit presents a man's point of view on relationships. The title to some may imply a strictly African-American slant, but in his diverse essays Mr. July conveys an everyman's experiences in the dating jungle. This is a notable addition to America's unique multi-cultural oeuvre of male vs. female discourse.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXPECT THE BEST FROM BROTHERS, LUST, AND LOVE., June 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brothers Lust and Love (Paperback)
The book carries an understanding about relationships. In order to get this understanding, you need knowledge, which William July humorously, and gallantly provides. July gives a clear, revealing picture about Black men thoughts, including their fears. The book is valuable for teaching and healing. Thanks for the frank information.
