Editorial Reviews

2013 collaboration. As children, the music of The Everly Brothers touched Dawn McCarthy and Bonnie Billy; it touches Dawn's children and the little "prince" within Bonnie today, and makes them dance and sing. What The Brothers Sang is no mere gesture of nostalgia; these new versions rethink The Everly Brothers for the audience of listeners today, people who naturally might have no knowledge or experience with those songs. Why should they? It's not everyone who trawls through the dust of the past for their pleasures. Most of us live today and so, for today, these songs are made.

This is a good album overall with some great highlights, but also some weaknesses. It is a collection of songs which were recorded by the Everly Brothers, and Prince Billy and Dawn McCarthy have wisely avoided most of their major hits and have put together a sequence of less well-known tracks. By and large they give the songs a country feel, with fiddle and steel guitar often evident. They have a very good band backing their harmonies, and it works very well much of the time. I like the feel of this album - it brings a new take on the material while respecting it, so that the style is adapted to the songs rather than the other way round. The singing is generally delicate and tender and captures the sense of those fabulous Everly Brothers harmonies even when they don't exactly reproduce the originals.

I do have some reservations. Possibly the best-known song here is Devoted To You and it doesn't quite ring with the poignancy of the original and sounds a little like an exercise in harmony rather than a heartfelt love song. I felt this in a couple of places, and some songs - Empty Boxes, for example - just didn't really work for me. There is a vein of slow sentimentality which can get a bit wearing for the whole album, so their terrific version of Somebody Help Me (the Spencer Davis song) stands out as a rocking gem and I could have done with a dose of something with the more up-tempo drive of Wake Up Little Susie or the wit of Bird Dog, say.

I don't want to be too critical because I do like the album in spite of its weaknesses. It is a good collection of songs from two excellent musicians, most of which are very well sung and arranged. I love the Everlys (and am proud to say that I have heard them live) and this is a worthy tribute. It's not a classic, but it's well worth getting.

When I tried a demo song from this CD, I liked it. I got the CD and listened to two times in a row. It feels very 70s - 80s. Like something you would hear in one of those smokey places that people go to drink. It has a very slow, relaxing feeling. I told my grandparents it was like music a couple would dance to back in the day. Very, very cool. I got it from iTunes, now I am going to get the CD for my brother, aunt, cousin and I will also buy the vinyl! I thought at first this was an old band that had made a new CD. I am happy to see these guys are new. As soon as they play at Pier 6, I will buy at least 3 tickets. Great band. Here is to more music like this being made instead of the same old digital crap that is popular today.

This cover of the Everly Brothers brought some new materials (for me) to light. I enjoyed it. But the Brothers do it best!

This is such a great record that I'll give it the ultimate compliment: At thirteen (13) tracks, it seems far too short! Seems as if Dawn McCarthy & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy were born to sing together, and making the LP all the more interesting, they don't just cover the obvious Everly Brothers hits. Here's hoping there's a sequel in the offing.
