While Big Books publisher Vernon Hemlock visits his priceless collection of erotica in the security-controlled basement, someone squishes him between two mechanical sliding shelves. The suspects include series protagonist Simon Bognor; Vernon's house guests at Byfleet-next-the-Sea; Vernon's wife Audrey; his slinky mistress, Romany Flange; and assorted authors for the rather sleazy publishing firm. Simon, special investigator with the British Board of Trade, and clever wife Monica look for motives and murderer on their own, their tongue-in-cheek narration and witty repartee constituting most of the attraction here. Still, pleasant enough. REK
