5.0 out of 5 stars the way brouwer meant it to sound, November 2, 2003
This review is from: Brouwer: Guitar Music, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
Brouwer himself states that Papandreou preforms his works the way they're supposed to, and I totally aggree!
Papandreou has a great sonority, an unbelievably balanced and astonishing technique, and most of all a profound interpretation. Brouwer himself once stated in an interview that his music is really easy to interpret, if you just play what he mentions in his partitures. Of course this is a little bit to modest of the great composer, but he obviously wanted to make clear that he wants the preformer to play exactly what's in the score, and this is, contrary to a bunch of other guitarists, certainly what Papandreou does on this cd. You can hear every little musical instruction brouwer put into his scores, plus a profound understanding of all the secrets of the pure magic this music holds.
Add to this the low price of this record, and you get a 5*-buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful collection, February 7, 2008
This review is from: Brouwer: Guitar Music, Vol. 2 (Audio CD)
This is my introduction to Leo Brouwer's music and I'm thoroughly impressed with this overview of his work. The music is a kaleidoscope of emotions and colors. The playing, while I'm not a guitarist, seems incredibly solid and expressive.

After having this disc now for a couple of years, I find myself listening to it far more than the J.S. Bach solo sonatas and partitas for violin (my instrument), and would rank the musical depth and statements I hear in Brouwer right up there with Bach.

At the current price this disc is a steal.

4.0 out of 5 stars a mautring composer, September 24, 2007

it is easy to see the different aspects of Brouwers music journey as a composer. When younger a very modern and self-indulgent style as he gained age he grew and became aware the just because we can make a sound does not always make that sound something others wish to hear. The record levels are too low (engineers fault) a nice performance. I bought it for his more mature work El Decameron Negro, which I also bought the sheet music as I wish to learn it, and or arrange it for a friend that plays Harp. all in all a good Cd to add to you collection. Every Guitarist should have all of Brouwers music in their collection.
