5.0 out of 5 stars Brouwer Vol III
Graham Anthony Devine is certainly one of the finest guitarists to come out of England in recent years. Some have said he is a "modern-day Julian Bream for the next generation"; perhaps an overstatement, but still a good measure of his growing reputation.

The music on this CD is relatively unfamiliar. My own favorites would have to be the Suite #2, Hika,...

3.0 out of 5 stars solid music for Brouwer fans
As with all Naxos CDs if you happen to find music on it you don't care for you at least didn't lose a lot of money in the purchase and all the music on here is pretty decent. Personally I greatly prefer Shin-ichi Fukuda's performance of Hika but that CD seems hard to get. If you've already got the other Naxos CDs with Brouwer's music you should get this one. Devine's...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brouwer Vol III, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Brouwer: Sonata; Hika; Suite No. 2 (Audio CD)

My own favorites would have to be the Suite #2, Hika, and Una Dia en Noviembre. These are all works which I have listened to several times over. The rest of the CD is quite good as well, not a stinkbug in the bunch, and well worth the low Naxos price.

Another collection of the guitar music of Leo Brouwer played by Britain's finest classical guitarist Graham Anthony Devine. Like the others, this one does not disappoint. Sublime playing and crystalline sound make this a must for guitar fans of all kinds.

I'm not a musicologist nor do I know much about contemporary guitar music or guitarists, but I just loved this CD. Beautiful music, beautifully played from the bold first chord. Loved the hommage to Beethoven's 6th symphony, tucked into the 1st movement of the Sonata!!

Devine's musicianship is good and the pieces are generally worth checking out, particularly Hika if you can't get Fukuda's recording, one of Brouwer's best works for solo guitar.
