I have been looking for these everywhere -- should have known to look online. The bowls were well packed and are just right!

I love these soup bowls. I already had a set of 4 bowls and used them so often during the winter that I ordered another set of 4. The handles are great - keeps you from burning fingers on a hot bowl. The shape of the bowl allows you to fill the bowl fully and then carry to the table without spilling a drop. I don't really use the lids very often, but they are nice to have if I need to keep the soup hot in the bowls while waiting to serve. I have also heated up cold soup in the microwave in these bowls without incident.

When opening the package I noticed the handle broke on one of the bowls. The shipping package was not damaged but I thought that this was just an accident while shipping. When I looked inside the bowls I notices that they were chipped inside. They were sent back the next day. I'm hoping to find something with better quality.

While these are made to look like ancient French soup bowls they are thoroughly modern in every way...oven safe, dishwasher safe and easy to clean. Certainly there are a wide variety of French Onion soup bowls available out there from Farberware to Fiesta to Fine China, but these have the distinctive look that communicates what you are about to receive. The lid keeps the contents hot and ready to serve and certainly purists will bemoan the lid. There are certainly many who want the Gruyere on top to be browned and that certainly is a valid argument. But the truth is too many people serve French Onion soup brimming to the top over overly festooned with croutons and too much Gruyere. The truth is it should be below the rim and restrained and there is certainly room for a lid for those who wish to peruse other appetizers while sampling their soup. Vive le difference!
