The Brown Bunny Soundtrack is truly a gem. This compilation was put together by Vincent Gallo, the writer/director/actor behind the movie. His own music is very interesting and subtle; though, none of his music is on this album. (Check out "When" by Gallo)

On this particular album, the first five tracks are a mix of simple jazz, folk, and generally soft moody tunes. The last five tracks, however, are all performed by John Frusciante - Gallo's friend and collaborator.

The tracks performed by Frusciante apparently don't appear in the movie. According to Gallo, he listened to Frusciante's music extensively during the creative phases of the movie - including the actual filming. He was inspired by the music.

Understandably so. Frusciante's songs create a mood that one might describe as aching. Regardless, the guitar-work is profound. His choice of notes, along with the vintage tones that he and Gallo are both known for, produce a lasting effect. Frusciante's voice is an instrument in and of itself. His falsetto vocals aren't for everyone - they're an acquired taste. Either way, his vocals match well with the music, producing a remarkable package that should be enjoyed by all.

This soundtrack can hold its own against the best of them. If you like unique music that relates sadness or loneliness - this album is for you.

I can see why Vincent Gallo used the first 5 tracks in the movie. Hearing these tracks clearly brings back images of the movie and seemed to perfectly gel with the concept. Tracks 1, 3, 4, 6 are some of the best ive heard in months. Beautiful music. Highly recommended.

I bought this cd at a virgin records in dallas for $18.99. Apearently they just released another version in the us...but this is the only thing i've heard of it...its a white cover on tulip records.

the first five tracks are beautiful, but i bought the cd for john frusciantes tracks. These five songs are primarily acoustic and are definately not what i expected (Which is good). these songs have great guitar parts....they seem to be pretty experimental. They sound like darker "shadows collide with people" songs. Worth 20 bucks.

I only bought this for one reason,for songs 6-10 by John Frusciante and I didn't care what it cost. Most people will struggle to part with such a large sum of money for a 42min CD, but if you are a serious die-hard John Frusciante fan, then I seriously recommend you buy this album, if only for John's tracks, as they aren't available anywhere else.
These 5 tracks he put aside especially for this soundtrack, all written roughly around and just after the 'to record only water for ten days' era. These songs are all sad, lonely, isolated sounding song. Much like the songs from 'smile from the streets you hold', but without the drug filled rambling and incoherent singing.
But I am a huge fan of his 'smile from the streets' album which is why these songs are among my favourite of his. They are all acoustic with some keyboards and very stripped down. They would not be out of place on the 'curtains' LP either. My favourite track is 'forever away', a 6min sombre, emotional, deeply moving song which is seriously up in my top 5 all time John Frusciante songs.
Forget about the price and get this CD, you will not regret it. I don't listen or care too much for the first 5 tracks and probably never will.

The CD is very well packaged and I quite like the cover.

or, to turn the tables, most reviews on the Amazon site the additional tracks NOT used in the film, from John Frusciante, who is a famous roqueiro, I believe.

For me, regardless what one will take from Signore Gallo's filmes (I enjoyed "Buffalo 66", Brown Bunny , not as well), and even of his soulful, yet amateur musical recordings (Bufalo 66 soundtrack features, and his CD recordings), Vincent Gallo has shown impeccable taste in choosing compositions for his soundtracks!

Instead of using tipico po tracks, he mines the vaults, and chooses musics obscure from "unknown" (to the general USian population) to "famous" musicians , where he chooses the most "obscure" of their compositions.

For Bufalo CD, early Yes and King Krimson, here, Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful", from the "familiar artistas" vaults, and on the Bunni soundtrack, the legendary trompettista Ted Curson and his tribute to the legendary sax/flautista Eric Dolphy ("Tears for Eric"), and the Italian Matisse/Accardo quarteto ("Smooth"), as well as obscure folcloric singer Jackson Frank.

These compositions are as integral to the mood of Gallofilmes as, say Morricone to Sergio Leone "westerns", por ex.!

Enjoy Gallo, despise him, no matter, this lad KNOWS what sounds great!

A true "contro-corrente" in every way, manifests best when comes to musics!

I bought this soundtrack three years before I finally settled down to watch the film. Being a true blue fan of Gallo's many works (music, film, photography, acting, writing, etc.) I knew that I couldn't pass up this gorgous Japanese edition of the Brown Bunny soundtrack.
It is assembled with great precision, skill and and stunning beauty. Within the context of the film (Frusciante tracks excluded -- more on them in a bit...) each track becomes more than they ever could on their own. The greatest power of music is its ability to inspire imaginary visions in the mind of the beholder -- Gallo has taken this to the next level by providing the perfect imagery to accompany each piece, compounding the experience. And of course they compliment one another perfectly. And it is a highly emotiional experience to behold.
The Frusciante tracks stand alone as concept music inspired by the film. Much in line with his prior solo work (Smile From The Street You Hold), they leave the listener to their own devices -- to dream up different scenes and scenerios, which makes The Brown Bunny and even more intimate experience. Their exclusion from the film is a clever way to extend the story beyond the screen.
Obviously, I cannot speak more highly of the film -- and this soundtrack, packaged in a gorgeous digpak with a generous ammount of stills from the picture as well as liner notes by both Frusciante and Gallo, is yet another prime example of Vincent Gallo's ability to pair perfect music with perfect imagery. Ultra lush. Worth every penny.

this album is worth buying for 2 insanely beautiful songs: prostitution song and falling, both by john frusciante.

I could care less about the first 5 songs, but Frusciante's contribution to this record/film is remarkable. "Dying Song" and "Leave all the days behind" are heavy and haunting. Intense lyrical performance and mystifying acoustics by John make this a worthwhile buy.
