5.0 out of 5 stars Hey, Sun, Don't Fill my Deck, August 23, 2010

After searching high and low for that just right umbrella I decided that this would fit most of my needs and in fact it met all of them. It eliminates the sun for quite a few square inches. I can sit out there in the comfort of a sunless deck and enjoy it without having to worry about the sun's movement. The sun travels behind the umbrella and leaves my area sun free for almost the entire day. Editors note: Some of the shade is provided by the house and the woods on either side of the umbrella but the umbrella shades the area significantly most of the time.

Construction and engineering are well done. I might have been a little more interested in a heavier weight cover; however, that add to the weight of the total umbrella and therefore might cause premature rotting. The support elements are quite sturdy and I expect that they will last more than one season and probably several. I'll have to get back to you on that one. I had an original concern with the blocks that are used to hold it in place. Many of the other brands either do not have meaningful holders but I have been delighted with the weight and design of the 3 blocks included with the umbrella. The picture does not give the design enough details. When I opened the box I found the 3 plastic blocks for filling with sand and subsequently used as an anchor. My first reaction was one of "what in the world do I do with these?" But after a closer examination I was impressed with the details of the blocks. The center piece is different from the other two because of the center pole. My biggest (?) decision centered on how do I get a 50 pound bag of sand to pour into that 2 inch hole without spilling most of it everywhere. No problem. I took an empty 1 gallon plastic vinegar bottle and cut the bottom off to make a funnel. Then I took a large scoop made from an empty plastic bleach bottle to scoop the sand from the bag and poured that into the properly placed vinegar bottle hole. With a few shakes after each pour I eventually had a sand filled block that weighed about 30 pounds. After two more fills I now have a sturdy umbrella that has not been blown down yet. I do take steps to avoid a 10 foot umbrella from sailing throughout the neighborhood, however. The crank mechanism works well and with a few drops of household oil or WD40 it is a smooth operation. So far I have seriously enjoyed my umbrella, the dogs like it and all is well. I would buy this again in a nanosecond.

Very nice big umbrella. It provides a lot of shade for us. The base took awhile to fill with sand, but once it is done, it is very heavy to keep umbrella very stable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting, April 24, 2011

I had higher hopes for this product. Despite having read about the problems with the sand filled base, I figured I had the patience and could deal with filling the 3 part base with sand. From the first use, I had to add more weight on the base using sandstone blocks. After only 4 or 5 uses, the cross member bracing that fits under the sand base broke, leaving the entire umbrella leaning. Style Shopping did offer replacement parts, and they are concerned about their reputation and the integrity of the items they sell. If you do purchase this umbrella, know upfront that you will need to supplement additional weight and do not leave open under anything but the lightest of breeze conditions.
