5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Romantic Suspense Books I've Ever Read
I love Romantic Suspense. I particularly love it when an author whose work I've enjoyed moves to romantic suspense without sacrificing the romantic element of the story. Mariah Stewart has done this with BROWN EYED GIRL. Gripping suspense, but passionate romance together in a book readers won't be able to put down once they start.

2.0 out of 5 stars It was just OK for me.
I'll be honest, I didn't like this book, I wasn't caught up in it at all. First, it was very slow starting - I like books that get right down to it from the first pages and keep it like that as you continue. Second, the book had too many narratives about nature for my taste, so, to be honest, I ended up skipping through a lot of pages. Even the conversations between main...

This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
I love Romantic Suspense. I particularly love it when an author whose work I've enjoyed moves to romantic suspense without sacrificing the romantic element of the story. Mariah Stewart has done this with BROWN EYED GIRL. Gripping suspense, but passionate romance together in a book readers won't be able to put down once they start.

Leah McDevitt is a features editor for a well-known magazine whose younger sister has been missing for several years. When a man who is on death row says he might have some information regarding her, Leah is anxious to meet with him. She does so, but the meeting does not lead to any concrete information instead the convicted killer wants money. Leah agrees to send him half now, half after he gives her more info. But, before he is able to reveal what he knows, he is killed by another prison inmate.

Leah is crushed. Just when she thought she might have some peace of mind she is crushed again. She seeks the help of the only other person she knows might be able to give her assistance, Ethan Sanger, the author of a book on the killer Leah talked to in prison. But Ethan is reluctant to share this information because in doing so, he will have to relive memories he's spent years trying to forget.

Nail biting suspense ensues when Leah realizes her own life is in danger. This is a highly recommended read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Allow plenty of time......, April 2, 2000
This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
because when you sit down to read Brown-Eyed Girl, you're going to have to finish it in one sitting!

I've been a fan of Ms. Stewart since her first book and she just keeps getting better and better. There are very few authors who are really good at Romantic Suspense. Generally, one category or the other is shortchanged, but not with this book.

Leah is a wonderful character and you feel every emotion right along with her as she tries desperately to find information on her missing sister. And Ethan, whose wife was a victim of the same serial killer Leah fears murdered her sister, is complex, kind, withdrawn, passionate and tortured - in short, a perfect hero. All of the secondary characters, especially Genna, Holly and Tom, are great examples of living, breathing people.

I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Melissa and I hated for the book to end! What better compliment for an author. I'm also rooting for Genna Snow, intrepid FBI agent,to have her own story told.

You must buy this book. I read dozens of books each month and this one is a definite "keeper".

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely a "must read author"!!!, March 7, 2002

I had never read a book by Mariah Stewart and was amazed to find how hooked I was right from the start when I found "Brown-Eyed Girl"! I have a group of authors whose books I try to make a point of reading, and she is definitely on my list now! I love her style of writing - the blend of romance and suspense and a little bit of every-day wit and humor are just the right ingredients. I also like the fact that there is not a great amount of sexual detail - just a great down-to-earth story, that has subtle romance which seems to be more effective and meaningful. The characters of Leah and Ethan are so well-developed that you feel they are people you would like to have in your life, and it is hard to let go of them at the end of the book. I am now reading "Voices Carry", which is sort of a sequel, in that the main characters of this book were secondary characters in "Brown-Eyed Girl", and I am thoroughly enjoying that book also. It is not necessary to read them in order, as the stories do not tie in very much, but I would definitely recommend that you read them both, as they are each such engrossing stories! In fact, I am so impressed with her style that I have ordered or bought all of her books to read, and am looking forward to many more "adventures"! So glad I found her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Suspense at its Best, April 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
I have just finished reading this story and as usual, Ms. Stewart has written a book you can't put down. The suspense is great and the characters are smart and likeable. Although I did guess before it was revealed who the "bad guy" was, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it. If you like Nora Roberts and Jayne Krentz, you will love this book. Hope Ms. Stewart writes a story about the FBI agents who appeared in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good romantic suspense!, April 10, 2000

This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
I am a very big fan of Mariah Stewart. I'm more into the relationship/romance stories, one's that don't include a dark side to life. The storyline caught my attention real fast, & I had a hard time putting it down. The relationship's grew as did the suspense. Ms. Stewart made this book even better than her others because the characters were flawed, troublesome and still very human and loving. I highly recommend this book, just allow plenty of time to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very intriguing and engaging story., August 28, 2005
This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
Mysteries tend to give me nightmares so I usually avoid reading them, but as a brown-eyed girl myself who loves the oldie song of the same name, I was drawn to this title. I loved the chemistry between Leah and Ethan. The relationships each had with Tom (Ethan's father) and Holly (Ethan's daughter) were very well-developed. The rural New England winter setting was enchantingly described too. The murder-mystery often was more gory and graphically detailed than I wanted to read, but the cunning way they solved the crime, and the surprising twist at the end, was very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good romantic suspense......., January 21, 2003
This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first Mariah Stewart book and I really enjoyed it. It was somewhat slow in the beginning, but it definitley got better toward the middle and I couldn't put it down until I finished it. I was also very satsified with the ending.

Leah McDevitt is a Feature Editor for Trends, which is a magazine based in NY. Upon returning home from working on an article abroad she finds a letter from a serial killer who is being exectued, stating that he knows where to find her sister Melissa who has been missing for seven years. Leah makes a deal with him, but before she finds out where her sister is, he dies in prison. Dejected and grieving all over again, Leah turns to the one person who may be able to help...

Ethan Sanger wrote the book on Raymond Lambert, dubbed The Vagrabond Killer. When Leah first comes to Ethan and asks to see his notes for the book, he wants to turn her down. However he finds that he can't. He knows what it's like to have a loved one missing and not know where to look. Together Leah and Ethan embark on a journey to find out what happened to Melissa.

This book has just the right amount of romance and suspense. The secondary characters are great and I can't wait to read Genna and Michael's story next.

It's defintley worth the time to read this book!

This was my first book by this author and I did not just read it in one sitting... no I had to read it twice in one sitting! The author gives us a great suspence story with a strong dose of romance and characters who relate to each other AND work together to solve what comes there way. There were lots of warm family scenes with the dad and daughter...The ending was a suprise and handeled well ... All in all I recomend it and really appreciating finding this book...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great suspense, great leading characters!, June 10, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brown-Eyed Girl (Mass Market Paperback)
Brown-eyed Girl by Mariah Stewart is one sweet little suspense novel and I regret that it took me so long to find it. The moral to that statement is order from Amazon and don't depend on your local bookstore.

Leah McDevitt lost a sister, Melissa seven years earlier. She disapeared without a trace and the police suspected foul play but could never prove it since they didn't have a body. Leah makes an appearance on a t.v. show dealing with survivors who have lost someone to crime. During the show, she confirms that the $50,000 reward is still open until she finds out what happens to her sister. Enter into the picture, Raymond Lambert, a convicted serial killer about to be executed. He offers information about Melissa if Leah will pay the reward money to him. Lambert has one vital piece of information that convinces Leah that he knows what happened to Melissa. Before Leah can transfer money into his account, he is killed on death row by another inmate. Not knowing where to turn, Leah contacts Ethan Sanger, the author of a book about Lambert. Sanger doesn't want to get involved. Lambert had left his mark on Ethan years before. Leah convinces him to help not knowing their world is about to come crashing down around them.

Brown-Eyed Girl is beautifully written and keeps your attention. I would have given this book a five except there were times that it was a little too obvious what was coming. However, this is one sharp book. Read it, you'll enjoy it.
