PreS-Gr 3--These lively introductions to the animal kingdom will appeal to children. Both books use hints to encourage children to identify the featured animals. Each double-page spread focuses on a particular physical characteristic, habitat, or diet of the featured creature. For example, in Brown, Fierce, and Furry, the left-hand page reads "Here is my paw" and shows a close-up of a paw. On the opposite side, the text states "I have long, sharp claws to dig up roots and little animals from under the ground." At the end of the book, the animal is revealed to be a brown bear. Fast, Strong, and Striped provides similar information about a tiger. Both titles include a map showing where the creatures live. Brightly colored, realistic paintings accompany the clearly written texts.
