Book Description

Some secrets should never be revealed…

Brylee Branson begrudgingly made the excruciating move with her family from the warm sandy beaches of California to small town living in New Jersey. As if she wasn’t miserable enough, they’ve moved into a creepy old house that everyone in the area claims is haunted. Brylee dismisses the idea of ghosts and hauntings, until she begins to see and hear things that can’t be explained…

Brylee has no choice but to seek the help of new friends to unlock the secrets of this place she now calls home. But some secrets should never be revealed. Can the teens find a way to release the spirits imprisoned within the walls? Or will the curse claim them, too?

I Love when I find a book that can affect me so emotionally & strongly and that's exactly what I found when I read the "The Brown House"! The story & characters are amazing! I was hooked from page one that I couldn't stop reading at all and the next thing I know I was at the end of the book & crying because I didn't want it to be the end I wanted it to go on.. it's like the story was my drug and I needed more of it! I can't wait for book two to be released so I can find out what's going to happen next!!! thank you Christy for giving your readers such an amazing book!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing March 6, 2013

This book sort of snuck up on me and left me somewhat surprised. This was not an overly spooky story, while it had its moments, I would classify this as more of a drama.

Sloat delivers a strong protagonist with Byrlee. She is extremely confident with amazing self image, especially in today's world where most young girls have self esteem issues. Being popular was not her priority, in actuality she hid from it like the plague making friends with the more down to earth Lynly, which ended up being mutually beneficial. She also put the needs of others at a fore front not just worrying about her own issues.

Living in an old house myself I could really relate to some of the descriptions. The house as an entity was well written with the slamming of doors and strange floor plan. I was especially fond of the description of how the ghosts materialize, and thought it to be not only inventive but original. Family ties are extremely important to this narrative and are handled with precision and strong dialogue. There are a few moments of tension and escalading aggression that only helped to enforce some of the family drama and built anticipation for the outcome.

While the descriptions and dialogue are well written, it did slightly lack on an emotional level. There were also a few things I felt were cleaned up a little too easily but for the most part it was a first-rate read. There were a couple of times that I though I knew where the story was going to go but then a twist and turn dissolved me of that notion. Overall I enjoyed the book especially the intriguing ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars love and ghosts, what more do you need? January 9, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This book started out slowly, but it soon built into an enjoyable comfortable read.

After her father loses his job Brylee finds her life uprooted when she has to leave her home and travel across country to her new house. She has an instant dislike to the house, but soon warms to it when she gets to know the neighbours, even when she finds out the house is haunted.

The story was well written and it did grab me (after the first few chapters) but I felt it needed a little more ghost involvement. I was always waiting for something to happen, then being a little disappointed when nothing did.
