3.0 out of 5 stars Meh.
I read this book in my childhood and now once again. I always liked the other book, "Math for Smarty Pants" much better, and still do. That book contained a bit of cute, quirky storytelling, with the reappearing characters in the comics as well as the Pig Eyes. This book, while just as quirky and does take math in a new light, doesn't have the hook the first had...

If you hear the word mathematics and cringe, you should read The I Hate Mathematics! Book. This book showed me how math can be a lot of fun. Unlike the math textbooks at school, The I Hate Mathematics! Book includes dozens of mind-boggling games and puzzles that challenge you to use your math skills. The book also includes math tricks you can play on your family and friends.

One of the math tricks could turn out to be very profitable. It is called Doing Dishes. To do this trick you need one adult and a never-ending flow of dirty dishes. Ask the adult to pay you one penny the first day you wash the dishes and double it each day. By the end of the month you'll be rich!

My favorite chapter is the one on Street Math. This chapter told me about math games that I can do when I'm outside in my neighborhood. Some involve the sidewalk, people's hats and even shoelaces! You would be surprised how math relates to so many things.

I think that The I Hate Mathematics! Book is informative and fun to read. I recommend it to people who don't have a great interest in math, people who want to know more about math and, of course, to people who already love math!

5.0 out of 5 stars made my life, May 22, 1998

I read this book as a kid at least 15 years ago. I can still remember many topics and even the layout of some pages. This is a great gift for a kid interested in math; it is friendly, fun, and yet substantive. It is an infinite well of cool stuff. I seem to have stumbled into a career in research mathematics now. Looking back, this book may be the main reason. I have never stopped thinking of mathematics as "cool stuff".

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!!, August 17, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Brown Paper School book: I Hate Mathematics! (Paperback)
This is an awesome book. I especially like the part that sets out to prove that grownups aren't as smart as they think they are. (Definitly true!) I think this book would be good for ages 9+. 8-year olds could do it but might need some help. I'm 10 and I was fine with it. Definitly worth it.

I have a daughter that literally HATES math. From the moment I told her of this book, she's been intrigued. She's read the book and says it makes math more interesting. I'm very happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Math Lover, December 4, 2001

This is a great book for math haters or math lovers. There are lots of interesting facts, games, and riddles, whether you think you are great or think you are terrible at math. If you hate math, this book can change your life. We have a copy of this book at home, and I've purchased this book to give to some of my children's friends and some home-schooling parents I know. I think giving this book to anyone who is afraid of math, whatever their age, is a great idea. I also highly recommend "Math for Smarty Pants", also by Marilyn Burns.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Math Book for Younger Kids Too, March 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Brown Paper School book: I Hate Mathematics! (Paperback)
The reading level for this book should just be a guideline. If parents are reading it, the examples & games can be done by kids much younger. My son's first grade teacher recommended using this book over the summer to prepare him for 2nd grade math enrichment.
The book gives lots of fun, practical exercises and is loaded with great concepts and ideas.

I read this book in my childhood and now once again. I always liked the other book, "Math for Smarty Pants" much better, and still do. That book contained a bit of cute, quirky storytelling, with the reappearing characters in the comics as well as the Pig Eyes. This book, while just as quirky and does take math in a new light, doesn't have the hook the first had. Don't get me wrong, it was a great read and I'm sure it would do wonders for reluctant math students, but it is certainly not the best Marilyn Burns has to offer. The other thing, and there is a note in the back about it, is the lack of answers. Many questions are posed to problems that just can't really be solved at the given time, but you're left with no answer, not even a hint. This is quite bothersome.

Lots of fun things any kid (or grownups) who might or might not hate math, but has a openable mind. All three of our kids have enjoyed things from this book, and I've used some of the activities with 9th graders. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zany and fun, August 29, 2007

This review is from: Brown Paper School book: I Hate Mathematics! (Paperback)
I, like some other reviewer, got this book around 15 years ago - a Scholastic Book Club purchase. I didn't hate math at the time (certainly don't now!), but the title was intriguing. The book was a lot of fun! I love the illustrations and the fact that most of the text is in that handwriting font style (I think). It's very informal and makes fun of adults. There ae all these funny, crazy pages with topics such as how to get close to a pigeon or how many popcorn kernels it takes to fill up a room or your mouth (or something). There are also several games - ideas for tutors, teacher, parents... Topics don't get drawn out so long that a kid can't pay attention, and you can learn about stuff you wouldn't normally talk about in adding and subtracting class. Basically, you can learn math and logic in a nice, fun, comfortable manner. I hope this book is still at my parent's house.

Very good book! We homeschool and I originally thought it was written for 3rd-4th graders, it is much farther above than that. But it will be helpful as we continue. Very good real-life examples of how to use math.
Fast delivery, good condition.
