Product Description

The Brown & Sharpe Dial-Cal dial caliper has a 1.25" diameter rotating dial with a lock, is made of stainless steel, and measures in inches. The covered rack helps prevent measurement error by protecting the gear from foreign matter. Linear accuracy meets Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) 862 standards. These calipers are for use in measuring inside dimensions (ID), outside dimensions (OD), depth and step.

The caliper measures 0.100" per revolution of the dial. The lock screw locks the dial and holds the sliding jaw in position. Adjustable zero set allows the user to set zero at a convenient distance. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers that offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Spring anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; spring anti-backlash systems use a spring to add a compressive force, thereby minimizing backlash.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, played a key role in setting industrial standards in the United States. Brown & Sharpe was acquired by Hexagon Metrology in 2001 and is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.

You can't go wrong with Brown and Sharpe calipers. I had a previous like instrument that I unfortunately dropped on concrete. I don't recommend this practice because the dial assembly will only absorb a limited amount of impact forces. All jokes aside, I supervised a calibration lab for five years and know first hand that Brown and Sharpe calipers maintain their accuracy over long periods of time.

I work as a supervisor at a large CNC shop. Many of my employees use Brown & Sharpe but I have previously been a Starett man until now. One of the other supervisors brought in his Brown & Sharpes from 1979 and they worked like they were brand new. I was sold! I had to get a set of my own. they are smooth And precise. My quality department was very pleased with the fact that they had to make no adjustments on these as they were of such high quality. I would reccomend that every machinist use Brown & Sharpe calipers. Anything else is puting the quality of your finished product at risk. Love them for sure!

This my second set of B&S calipers (first was stolen) and I love them. They are very acurate and I like the .0005" graduations on the face, but... Where the heck is the wood box?! I know they got bought by TESA but really, a cheap plastic box?

I work in a high end machining shop, with many different brands of calipers on the floor. I can say with certainty that after using a multitude of different brands, Brown & Sharpe had the best "feel" when gaging dimensions. The B & S calipers are also the brand of calipers that seem to last the longest, as all the older machinists still are using their original B & S calipers they got decades ago. Had mine for 2 years now, and it's the most accurate caliper in my plant. Highly recommend.

This is not the fault of Brown & Sharpe, but the calipers shown on the Amazon web page have a thumb wheel adjustment. The unit I received does not. This is an important feature to me. I am sending them straight back. Having said that these are very nicely made and if they had the thumb wheel in the pictures I would have been quite happy.

Very smooth action, repeatable readings, well built, best reputation on the market make this the best choice for a caliper. This is probably more than you need if you are reloading bullets but it can be your only caliper you will need for a lifetime. My only complaint if anything is I wish the face was dull WHITE instead of a LIGHT GRAY. I guess with my aging eyes lighter colors are more appealing to me but thats only me. I use this primarily indoors so light reflection is not an issue which the gray face may be an advantage. The storage case it comes in is made of very sturdy plastic and outstanding in my opinion. Outstanding caliper and still Swiss made.

I work as a precision machinist on various US/Monarch lathe's & Bridgeport/Cincinnati millers all day, every day. Fowler & SPI are fine for basic measuring but I needed something more accurate for my close-tolerance work. These calipers measure almost perfectly, or at least within .001. Some other calipers lose accuracy as they measure out to the 6" mark but I haven't noticed that with these, they still hold .002 easily.
The black face is personal choice, but I find it resists oil tarnishing that happens to some white faces over several years.
The only downside is the lack of a thumb roller. But they do have a raised/barbed section on there that works just as well, and the carriage slides easily enough (though not too easily). I have found that I got used to the design quickly and easily.
My Brown & Sharpe micrometer has lasted me for more than 20 years so, if I'm careful I can see myself getting that out of these. Good quality, good accuracy even in a precision machine shop.

I received this in the mail today and it is a "very" nice unit. Is is smooth but a bit seemd little stiff (not jerky) out of the box. It does not have a "thumb" wheel like the Starret which I also have in this size. I tried the Starret without using the thumb wheel and it was identical to the this unit in effort required. So a thumb wheel will reduce effort to move. I tried both the Starret and this unit on a known object and got exactlly the same readings as one would expect. The Silver numerals on the black back ground are as easy to read as the black on white numerals on the Starret even in dim light. This unit has a solid metal dial case (Starret has plastic) which I really like and seems to be a touch smaller in over all dimensions than the Starret. The unit comes in an attractive dark grey plastic case with a positive slide latch mechanism. The Starret comes in a red plastic box wih a simple "pop" type latch. Additionally this unit has space in the standard plastic case that is supplied for a T-Bar depth base. You must upgrade to the optional case if you want that for the Starret. All in all it is really hard to choose between the two as both are qulity instruments. Note if you get the T-Bar depth base you need to order part no. 5.60013. It is finished in silver and sized in mm and is approximatley 3 inches long and will fit in the supplied box. Do not order part 5.60086. It is finsihed in black. It will fit the caliper but is too big at 3.35" long to fit in the cuttout in the supplied case!
