Product Description

The Brown & Sharpe Shop-Cal digital caliper measures a range of 0-6"/0-150mm in inches or metric units, has a 0.001"/0.0254mm accuracy and a 0.005"/0.01mm resolution, and is made of stainless steel. The 1/4" (6.35mm) high liquid crystal display helps ensure readability. Linear accuracy meets Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) 862 standards. These calipers are for use in measuring inside dimensions (ID), outside dimensions (OD), depth, and step.

The caliper’s stainless steel construction makes it resistant to corrosion, rust, and staining. The thumb roller allows measurements to be taken quickly. This caliper works for 1.5 years with a CR 2032 3V lithium battery (sold separately). Automatic shut-off helps preserve the battery life.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, and machining. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The digital caliper takes a differential by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD that displays a single value in English and/or metric units.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, played a key role in setting industrial standards in the United States. Brown & Sharpe was acquired by Hexagon Metrology in 2001 and is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.

I've been using Brown&Sharp for 35 years. Always the best. This one, as with all their new products, is not up to the same standards they always held. Seems these days everything is competition and making inexpensive products. The outside measurements are off from the thick part to the tips by about .0015. Maybe .002 if I press a bit hard. It's workable but it should be better. In case you're wondering, it's not the adjustment for play. That's the first thing to check. If it was any tighter it would not slide. Other than that it is a fine measuring instrument.

This is a decent digital caliper. I bought it for work and use it almost every day without issue. It doesn't have the quality "feel" of the older B&S Dial Calipers. These are lighter and have some plastic on them.

They are digital however, so less weight and a little plastic is possible as digital replaces mechanical. I wasn't thrilled that the depth rod is thinner than my dial version, but it may give me better access in some instances.

I went with digital this time as we work in both metric and inches and now I don't have to convert. I went with Brown and Sharpe based on past experience and this model because we already had a few of these in the shop.

This unit also has incremental or absolute mode. Incremental mode lets you set the zero point where ever you want to. So, if you wanted to check a bunch of parts that should be 102.73mm ± .05mm, you could set your zero at 102.73mm and any reading greater than .05 (or -.05) is no good.

In general, I don't think there is much difference between the major brands these days. So you could go with any of them. Just look for the features you want.

I do know these are solid digital calipers for shop use.

I got this to have a solid, accurate caliper for measuring small mechanical piece parts. I'm pleased that it is Swiss made, and it is a giant step up from the cheap Chinese made calipers you find at most hardware stores. The movement along the scale is smooth and the measurements taken are consistent. My only complaint is that I would like a slightly deeper jaw since occasionally there are some measurements I can't make since I bottom out on the scale.

This has become my go-to caliper for machine shop and hobby work. It is well built; measurements are sufficiently repeatable and consistent if good measuring techniques are used. As others have said, though, it's not as nice as higher priced B&S/Hexagon products. For me, it's a nice medium; accurate enough for machine work, but not so expensive that I'm constantly worried about dropping it.

These do what they are suppose to do. They are accurate and repeatable. There is no point in using a cheaper pair if you don't have confidence in the measurement. Many reviews of cheaper products indicate that the measurements are inaccurate and bounce around. If you don't want a reliable measurement you might as well just make a guess. If you need an accurate measurement Brown & Sharpe has a reputation for providing just that and this item lives up to that reputation.
