Part Number: 599-577-1Measurement Accuracy: +/-0.001"Resolution: 0.001"Range: 0-6"
The significance of a caliper to a tool user cannot be overstated. The case could be made that the caliper and other tools for precision measurement of linear distance set the conditions for the industrial revolution, much as the chronometer revolutionized navigation and map-making. Precision measurement is essential to precision machining. Precision machining is required for interchangeable parts, efficient tools, reducing size of parts and end products, and all sorts of things most Americans take for granted.

In the 21st century, we are spoiled with digital displays on everything. From the late 1970s to the end of the 20th century, everything that did not have a digital display had a dial where a needle would give you the precise answer. Verniers go back to the 18th century and earlier, and their use in machining tools goes back to the 19th century. The vernier is the bit where two scales (the things that look like rulers) don't quite match up.

This caliper is the the apex of vernier caliper design. It can do inside, outside, and depth measurements to a thousandth of an inch or 5/100ths of a millimeter. If you're man enough to learn to read a vernier after being spoiled by digital and dial displays, this caliper is more durable and less likely to go out of calibration than those other gadgets.

As a tool, this caliper is a work of art. Beautifully manufactured, the least number of moving parts to do what it is required of it, and made to last. Even the wood case will endure on your work bench. Yes, it is expensive, but not as costly as poor measurements. It is easy to see why this caliper is still in demand.

Bought this for my son-in-law who is studying Mechanical Engineering. Excellent Vernier Calipers. Buy these if you plan to use them in a professional environment. They will last a lifetime.
