5.0 out of 5 stars Flame Thrower
This book throws caution to the wind. It is very hot. My favorite stories are "Drag," "Hail Mary Full of Grace," "Nadine's Husband," "Deecy and Pheo," and believe it or not you have got to read the introduction by the editor which kind of surprises you it is so sexy. I think the introduction is a story too, or it may be real...

1.0 out of 5 stars Where is the sex?
I am so sorry, but I can't say that there was anything erotic at all about this book. I was looking for erotica not soft porn. It was like having someone think that they were going to a full-course meal and they were served Ritz crackers.

Alpine County, in my opinion was very boring. If I wanted to know about two lesbian that lived until they were 70-something years old...

A good book that has been a long time coming. What a stroke of smarts Carol Taylor had when she decided to include some younger, need-to-be-read writers. Here's an opportunity to read the best of the new. The story, Nadine's Husband is worth the price alone. Inclusion of that story's author, Preston Allen, gives the collection real credibility as serious work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep and Hot, February 11, 2001

Wow. I was blown away by the beautiful sexy writing in the book. I loved all of the stories in the book, but especially the ones near the end: "Never Say Never," White Girl Blues," and "How I Became a Writer," and even "Responding to Her Touch," which all involve interracial sex. This is a brave and "deep" book, not just sexy. I'm not kiding when I say that some of these stories could be taught at college. This is not a pornographic book. Just sexy and profound, but very, very sexy. I am looking forward to reading more stories from all of these writers: Allen, PATRick, TERvalon, Giffith, DaWEs, Blackman, Fleming, Sapphire for how deep they are.

This book had so many different elements to it. I really liked All of Me and How I became a Writer. In these stories the women gained strength through there success. Nadines Husband, Responding to her Touch, and Deecy and Pheo were great stories of forbidden love. I enjoyed Hail Mary full of Grace; however, I found it somewhat disturbing.

I could no put this book down. The stories are erotic, touching, and disturbing. It is a must read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Preston Allen should expand "Nadine's Husband" into a book!, April 11, 2001
This review is from: Brown Sugar: A Collection of Erotic Black Fiction (v. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
Like all good stories the ending should leave you wanting more. Reading "Nadine's Husband" left me wanting to know everything. I just have to know what happened next. Does she just go on loving him? How does she continue being "little sister" after she's finally gotten her heart's desire only to have it taken away by the love of her life?

Preston L. Allen is no joke and should shop this short story around as a chapter to his upcoming book. The remainder of the stories in Brown Sugar are okay but "Nadine's Husband" won over my passion and took my heart. I know all writers are different but I would have loved to see more stories with the power of Preston Allen's words. Most of the stories just seemed like words on paper, flat and without depth. Mr. Allen may have spoiled it for all that followed.

Being able to read "Nadine's Husband" was worth buying the book!

this isn't just smut on paper. these short stories are strong even without the sex scenarios. but with the sex scenes, they are absolutely delicious. they will definitely get you hot and bothered.

This was a fantastic assembly of erotic moments from ALL over the map. While I cannot fully relate to every single one of the circumstances and/or motivations that brought on the sensuality in this collection (after all, I'm neither a sexually empowered female, nor a teenage premature ..., nor a lesbian in love, nor even a suave, good looking single guy searching for the next big score); I really could connect to the passions in every act.

The collection is very well edited and integrated into a work that makes blood rush to some of those nice places on your body. It made me imagine myself, my lover, and those intimate moments in different ways. It also made we want to TAKE more of those moments, GIVE more of those moments, ENJOY more of those moments and most of all CELEBRATE more of those moments for what they are, in the time they are happening.

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicious real life peek in Black Erotica today, April 10, 2001

If there ever was any doubt in your mind that black erotic writing differs from let's say Victorian, Oriental or Indian (if one could use liscence to classify writings as such) then this book will confirm that belief. Like all compilations of short erotic stories there are some that you will like and some that totally suck. I really enjoyed two of the stories, "Nadines Husband' and 'Never Say Never' In the first story, Pam, the younger sister of Nadine feels quite justified in helping herself to her sisters husband, Johnny, when it was discovered that Nadine was doing her white boss. A delicious story that simply sizzles and certainly rings true to life in my bok. The other great story deals with Diane who may not have a problem in staring a relationship with a white guy but does have a problem with men that are shorter than her. Her ad in a singles magazine brings out an unlikely white candidate for her affections. I loved this story since preconceived barriers are broken after verbal interchanges and mind games which make the erotic story that much more so. After all the critical part of eroticism is that the characters and the readers must have a brain to enjoy the seduction .... The book may not be everyone's cup of tea but then after all that is why it's called Brown Sugar and it's erotic black fiction...

4.0 out of 5 stars It was alright, but some of the stories dragged on..., August 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Brown Sugar: A Collection of Erotic Black Fiction (v. 1) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a fan of erotic stories so I thought I'd give Brown Sugar... a try. Brown Sugar was a good summer read and I took every chance I could at work to read it. Some of my favorite stories were Nadine's Husband, Click and Never Say Never. Some of the stories dragged on and on or some of them were kind of boring and I didn't quite get it but maybe that was just me. A lot of the stories do tempt me try out other novels written by the authors from these stories because they were intriging. This is a good book to purchase or at least check out in the library.
