I recommend all of Jack London's works; he is the best American author with a tremendous ability. One side note, keep a dictionary handy, Jack London's vocabulary is extensive.

Short stories by Jack London. Some are about the Yukon and the others are sailors tales. All in all enjoyable to read. Read one or two stories at a time.

One great advantage of the Kindle is that you can go back and read all the great stories that you read as a kid but didn't appreciate. Jack London is a good example and it's very affordable.
