Product Description

Peter Noone and co. were stars on both sides of the pond when they appeared in these flicks ('66, '68), both now firmly ensconced in cult classic-dom. Both soundtracks hit our charts but haven't been available here since their initial release. The title songs join the hits There's a Kind of Hush; Leaning on the Lamp Post; A Must to Avoid , and more!

Review

This two-fer from ABKCO Records features a pair of out of print Herman's Hermits soundtrack albums, Hold On! and Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter, both originally issued on MGM in 1966 and 1968, respectively. The story line for Hold On!, the group's first film, involves NASA wanting to name a spaceship after the group while frontman and teen idol Peter Noone develops a crush on Louisa, played by Shelly Fabares. At that time in early 1966, Herman's Hermits were still one of the most popular British Invasion bands. Two years later, at the time of the second film, one that focuses on dog racing while Peter Noone develops a crush on Judy, played by Sarah Caldwell, the group had already peaked. The films are fun, but are second (or third) rate next to A Hard Day's Night and Help! The soundtracks, however, are loaded with some of the Hermits' best tracks: "A Must to Avoid," "There's a Kind of Hush," "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter," and "Leaning on the Lamp Post." Also included is an unlisted bonus demo of "Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter," which is played at a much slower tempo than the hit version. While a greatest-hits package would satisfy most casual listeners' needs, these albums are worth acquiring for fanatics of the '60s British Invasion group. -- AllMusic.com, Al Campbell

Here's an unexpected treat for fans of Herman's Hermits. This CD presents both the "Hold On!" and "Mrs. Brown" soundtrack LPs in stereo, with many outstanding new stereo mixes and stellar transfers made by Peter Mew at Abbey Road Studios.

Included is a new, first-time stereo mix of "There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)," with the rhythm track and vocals centered and the brass and strings separated. It's quite amazing to hear this song in stereo after having only the muddy, mono mix available for over 40 years. Only the original version of "Mrs. Brown" remains in mono, but as a bonus (not listed on the CD cover), Abkco has included a 2:05 rehearsal from the recording session during which the band attempts the song with an a cappella intro, with studio chat between Peter Noone and the engineer.

While the US "Hold On!" LP was issued in true stereo, EMI used the mono mixes for the 4-CD retrospective set. These mixes represent the CD debut of the "Hold On!" tracks in stereo and the remixes are remarkable. The thin, tinny stereo mix of "A Must to Avoid" is replaced here by a much fuller, very pleasing stereo mix. "Leaning on a Lamp Post" is, of course, the LP version, but also sounds great in stereo (as the old MGM albums used to say).

This is an absolutely essential CD for every collector of the 'ermits. And bravo to Abkco for really doing it right!

With oldies radio having reduced Herman's Hermits catalog to only a couple of their hit singles, many listeners may be unaware of the group's immense mid-60s popularity. The Hermits were the top-selling British group in 1965, besting even the Beatles, spurred manic responses from female fans, and starred in two feature-length films. ABKCO's two-fer pulls together the soundtracks from both 1966's Hold On! And 1968's Mrs. Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter. To be fair to the Fab Four, neither of the Hermits' films holds a creative candle to A Hard Day's Night (or even Help, really), and while the soundtracks haven't the brilliance of Lennon, McCartney and Harrison, they do combine charming hit singles, interesting explorations of folk-rock, good album tracks, and yes, some filler.

Hold On spun off two hit singles, the music-hall styled "Leaning on the Lamp Post" and the folk-rock "A Must to Avoid." The latter is one of four titles penned by ace Los Angeles writers P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. The Hermits' original version of Sloan & Barri's "Where Were You When I Needed You" hasn't the venom of the Grass Roots' subsequent hit, but Peter Noone's double tracked vocal is a nice touch, and the band cuts an interesting groove that marries British Invasion beat music and West Coast folk-rock.

I removed one star only because of all the new mixes on the CD, two of them are in mono...OK, the new mono mixes of Where Were You and All The Things both have gorgeous sound, better than the original ones, but why remix in mono? it would be better release the old stereo mixes instead. Didn't understand it. But, anyway, the presence of There's a Kind Of Hush for the first time is amazing and makes this CD mandatory. Notes: the hidden track is the recording sessions of the film ending version of Mrs Brown. It's a pity that it has just few seconds, because, in the film, when the 1968 version ends they edit with the 1965 version. Note that the engineer asks Pete to sing thinking of the scene. I think that this CD is a sampler of what can come later...who knows the stereo mix of No Milk Today? the sample that appeared in the internet might be copied from a Peter Mew mix tape...
