Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—In this follow-up to Brownie & Pearl Step Out (S & S, 2009), Brownie, draped in a pink feather boa, applies pink lipstick, pink glitter, "rosy spray," and powder, and brushes her hair. Her cat gets a string of pearls around her furry neck and similar treatment. When they emerge from the bedroom, her parents exclaim, "You are so dolled up!" And "Brownie and Pearl know it." The simple text is set in big bold type and is perfect for beginning readers. Digitally rendered cartoon illustrations feature expressive close-ups of the "dolling up" routine and lots of pink—on fingernails, toes, bedding, and more.—Carrie Rogers-Whitehead, Kearns Library, UT

From Booklist

Brownie, the girl with the bobbed hairdo, and Pearl, her calico kitty, are in dress-up mode. Brownie finds a feather boa. “Pearl finds pearls.” From there, it's powder to lipstick to glitter. The often one-word text is so simple that this can be used as an early reader (“Lipstick?”). But the real draw is the endearing digitally rendered artwork, which fills the pages and features large, simple images that can be easily seen in group settings. Although few cats would allow themselves to be so gussied up, Pearl doesn't seem to mind; she's as excited as Brownie to be “so DOLLED UP!” Fun. Preschool. --Ilene Cooper

A great book! I bought this for my niece for Christmas and she loved it! She's already memorized the book. If you are familiar with Brownie & Pearl, and if you are not : these books are the best!

My four-year-old and I love Brownie and Pearl. They aren't super wordy, but the illustrations are so much fun.

I'm trying very hard to keep from preordering/buying all of them as new ones pop up.

And, Ms. Rylant, if you're reading this -- "Brownie and Pearl Clean Their Room" would make a a good addition to the series.

My three year old daughter (who will be four this week) loves the Brownie and Pearl books! My older two children were listening intently to Blueberries for Sal and Make Way for Ducklings at an early age, but this little one is very "busy" and has a shorter attention span. The Brownie and Pearl books are great for children who really can't sit still long enough to listen to a wordier book. My daughter loves this simple story about a little girl and her cat dressing up with feathers and pearls and glitter- all the things she loves to dress up with herself! The illustrations are cheery and colorful and appropriately simple. When I am able to find well written short books with a plot for my little girl (as opposed to books with one word per page that simply teach numbers, colors, or the like), I am thrilled because she is learning to love reading! She will work up to longer stories eventually, but for now, I am just so glad that she is learning to treasure books and time reading together.

This book is about the little girl and her little cat dressing up for fun. I am not sure about some of the scenes that are depicted. For example, the "rosy scent" scene. I think it is about spraying perfume. You know that little ones like to copy what they see and I am worry now that my little one will try to spray my perfume while I am not hawking over her. It will not be fun if she gets some in her eyes. Another scene is about having glitter on her hair. We tried that and let me tell you that it is very hard to wash them off. Overall, the book is a fun read and the illustrations are cute. I would hesitate to read this book over and over again to remind my little one about the perfume and the glitters!~ Also, I am not sure how a little boy can related to this story line...

I love the illustrations and the sweet adventures Brownie & Pearl go on in these books. What I really love is that my 15 month old brings me her Brownie & Pearl books more than any of the others. They are short and sweet and hold my daughters attention, which is hard to do at her age.
