I was a Marine Corps Armorer (small arms repairman). When stationed at Camp Schwab Okinawa Right on the ocean, all our weapons were stored in a hot locker. The source of heat were rows of light bulbs. The reasoning is that if the metal parts of the weapons are warmer than the ouside air, moisture won't be attracted to the weapon. It works, none of my hundreds of weapons ever formed rust on them. This product does the same thing in your gun safe.

I almost don't know what to say. I needed a dehumidifier and this did the trick. It appears to be the same one I purchased 10-years ago which is still working well.

My gun cabinet is in an unfriendly enviroment, my basement. It is somewhat heated, has a/c and a dehumidifier, but I wanted to make sure my guns would not rust. I followed instuctions setting it up, and it is a little warmer in there than my room temperature. I'm using it in an old '60s era wood/glass sliding door cabinet. So far so good!

UPDATE 1/18/2012
It's winter here and about 52 degrees where my gun cabinet is in the basement. I reached in today to grab a rifle, and was surprised at how warm it was. The stick does the trick!
UPGRADE from 4 stars to 5 stars, worth every penny.

I recommend this dehumidifier to anyone who is looking for a great way to keep moisture away from your firearms and valuables. I have a 49 cubic foot gun safe, and my 18" Everdry dehumidifier is able to keep the temperature in my safe several degrees above that of the temperature outside the safe, causing the moisture to be forced out around the door opening. Great product.

I bought this and had some concern because of the size of my safe and it's location. I was concerned about one rod not being able to keep up with the moisture because of the fluxuating temp. I have a wide body Cannon safe and it has done a great job.

This is an excellent product, I've had it about a month. It came quickly, and it is as described. Used in a safe, the power cord can be threaded through a small hole: the plastic cap on the power cord end pulls off the metal tube and the flexible heating element can be removed. Pull the plastic cap carefully over the flexible heating element and remove it. From the outside of the safe, feed the flexible heating element into the safe through a small hole (I put a rubber grommet into the hole to preclude the metal safe from abraiding the power cord); once inside the safe, carefully slide the plastic cap back on, over the flexible heating element and onto the power cord (the end of which is now outside the safe); I put a small overhand knot in the power cord between the plastic cap and the heating element to keep the power cord from pulling out of the device. Slide the heating element and power cord knot into the metal tube and replace the plastic cap; plug it in and you're done. Easy, simple, effective. I put mine on the floor of the safe since heat rises. The device is "hot" but not too hot to touch or move; just uncomfortable to hold. I put a thermometer in my safe and it appears the temperature is about two degrees above ambient.

This keeps my gun safe nice and warm and dry. Actually my safe is a little to warm. This would actually work better in a safe that was not in the home and where the temperature fluctuated.

If you've got guns in a safe or small closet and want to protect them from rust this is the ticket. You'll save a few bucks over what the speciality dealers want for the same product too.
