About the Author

Albert Payson Terhune was a journalist but is probably best known as a breeder of dogs, in particular collies at his Sunnybank Kennels. Bruce charts the story of an unwanted puppy who becomes loved by the mistress of the family. He then becomes enlisted as a carrier dog in World War 1, completing heroic tasks and coming home a war hero. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

i really enjoyed reading bruce again. it is a simple book told from the dogs perspective mostly, and all the more interesting, and different for it. told in language understandable to an older young reader, it won't put an adult asleep either. plenty of action here about bruce the collie's wartime career. the author owned 10 collies of his own, and it shows in his empathy, and understanding of his central character bruce. the story of bruce will be loved by all dog lovers for generations to come!

This was a wonderful story of Bruce, who was born as a 'second', not originally of show quality, but who found a home with the Master and Mistress after a difficult start. The book starts with the story of a young boy who adopts Bruce's mother with his birthday money. The parents do not approve of the purchase because the dog is female (I don't understand what the problem was with female dogs in that era?) and the father works to get rid of the dog much to the heartbrake of the son. Bruce's mother is accidently shipped as a show dog to the Master and Mistress and has a litter of just 1 - Bruce. Eventually Bruce's mother is returned to the young boy, but Bruce remains with the Master and Mistress who grow to love him and even rescue him from a "doctor" who wants to perform experiments on him. Bruce is put into commission as a courier dog in WWI and much of the story focuses on his adventures in the war. I learned a lot about these war dogs through this book and have much appreciation for the service they provided to their human soldiers. I was surprised that the book turned out to be about Bruce and not his mother, but it was a wonderful story, I recommend it to any dog lover or even WWI enthusiast.

Bruce is a fun book, but has some sadness as Bruce grows up and becomes a magnificent Collie and is "drafted" for the war effort - World War I - that is. Bruce exposes the questionable use of war dogs to courier written messages back and forth to the front lines and foxholes of WWI. He is shot at, injured, patched up and sent out again. Many, many other dogs are not so fortunate. Eventually he comes home to a heroes welcome to live out his life at Sunnybank. A wonderful story and very easy reading.

In my own novel, "Jack: The Christmas Collie" I tried to recreate some of the same charm, romance and adventure of Terhune's novels.

I strongly recommend this and any other Terhune book for middle-school to adult.

I love Albert Payson Terhune, and I bought this book so my kids could combine one of his wonderful stories with their study of WWI. I chose this edition, I admit, for financial reasons -- and it has been proven once again that you do get what you pay for, most of the time. The quality of this copy was disappointing. The paper and binding don't bother me, but the layout looks like something a junior high student printed off his computer -- no paragraph indents, no nice chapter breaks, all margins are exactly the same... it just looked... lazy. A little more effort in the production might be worth the time for this publisher. I'll be in no hurry to purchase another book from them unless I intend it as a "disposable" copy, because that's what these look like. No one who loves books would print like this.

I recommend this book to anyone of all ages. This book was a bit of surprise to me because I've a few books by Albert P. Terhune that are the exact same type; a collie saving a person from a pond, saving a sick child, etc. But this story was actually in a chapter book format, rather than a compilation of short stories. The book as a whole was heartwarming and memorable, and I'm very pleased that I have this book. It just brings the reader even closer to Terhune's collies and the breed in general

I grew up in middle school ravenously reading all the Redwall and Valdemar books the public library had. During a rare clean out of my room I uncovered an old copy of "A Dog Life" by Terhune and remembered how much fun I had it. As a result that was the next group of books I devoured from the public library. This was one book of his that I hadn't read until I found it here for free on Kindle.

I highly recommend this book to any and all dog lovers, and animal lovers in general.

The large type-set was not particularly centered well but the book itself was in fine condition. Terhune wrote so well that the intense feelings we have for our pets comes across perfectly. He also helps me understand collies; their sometimes aloofness, their big hearts, their disdain for badness. I have a collie and I don't think I would have understood him so well except for Terhune. Good reads for anyone with this kind of dog.

Another one of Terhune's collie stories. This novel tells the story of Bruce from Ugly Duckling to heroic war dog. It is rather amazing reading older books to see what cultural thoughts make thier way into the novel. If you are a German, you might want to skip this one, for Terhune was writing either during WW I or just after and there are some anti-German passages.

This book is more in the tradition of Wolf, though the ending is far different. It is an exciting and quick read.
