From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-An uneven collection of 13 new and previously published tales by children's and adult science-fiction authors. The protagonists range from a newspaper reporter investigating strange disturbances of nature in Al Sarrantonio's "Overseer" to an alien child abducted by earthlings in David Honigsberg's "The Toy Room." Several stories feature young people, including Nicholas Fisk's standout "The Boy, the Dog, and the Spaceship" and Tim Waggoner's excellent "Buried Treasure." However, a number of the selections are less accessible for this audience, such as Harlan Ellison's "A Lot of Saucers," which includes scenes of carnage and difficult vocabulary, and Diana Wynne Jones's "Dragon Reserve, Home Eight," which has an intricate and sometimes confusing plot. Each story is illustrated with a black-and-white drawing on the title page; short biographies of the authors and illustrators appear at the end of the book. Middle-grade readers will undoubtedly enjoy several of these selections, but Bruce Coville's Alien Visitors (1999) and Bruce Coville's Strange Worlds (2000, both Avon) offer stories that are more uniform in style and readability.
