Book Description

January 15, 1998
Architect Bruce Goff (1904-1982) is recognized as one of the 20th century's great creative geniuses. The spatial and textural qualities of his work can now be better understood and enjoyed with the release of "Bruce Goff: 3 Houses," a packet of 21 full-color three-dimension photographs on three View-Master reels.

Each reel contains 7 interior and exterior views of one of Goff's extraordinary houses: The Ford House (1947; Aurora, Illinois), The Bavinger House (1950; Norman, Oklahoma) and The Joe Price House and Studio (1956-1974; Bartlesville, Oklahoma), known as Shin'enKan, which was completely destroyed by fire in 1996. Included in the packet are notes on Goff's work contributed by architect Malcolm Holzman, and thoughts by Goff himself on the nature and limits of photography.

This review is from: Bruce Goff: 3 Houses (3 View-Master reels) (Product Bundle)
Michael Kaplan has done a very impressive job using 3-D photography in exploring the wild Frank Lloyd Wright on acid exteriors/interiors of Bruce Goff homes. All the photos (seven per reel/home) exploit the simulated depth of the 3-D camera with a deep focus that allows a better insight on the construction of these unusual homes. The spiral staircase in the Bavinger House will almost make you gasp.

These make a great conversation piece for the home....

5.0 out of 5 stars SPATIAL Observance, December 21, 2008

This review is from: Bruce Goff: 3 Houses (3 View-Master reels) (Product Bundle)
This VIEWMASTER release [especially when paired with the FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT set] only HINTS at the extraordinary homes, that were meant to become ORDINARY homes, designed by architect BRUCE GOFF. [HE taught the subject at OKLAHOMA UNIVERSITY, Norman, OK.]
The BAVINGER HOUSE is not open to the public. So, these pics reflect how well the house [built in 1955!]holds up in one family's use. [Yes, the house is still in the BAVINGER family.]
GOFF may very well have been the person who coined the phrase "Think OUTSIDE the BOX," as few of his organic designs, if any, include a 4 walled square or rectangular room.
Yes, some of the LOUD carpet choices, have become gawdy reminders of the MOD movement. And in the use of color and organic shapes, GOFF and LLOYD WRIGHT are exact opposites. GOFF homes, like Lloyd Wright's, are treasured, and inhabitant's have to adjust to the design. [one of Goff's proclivities includes the lack of bathroom and closet doors...]
Odd Structural elements like the used/discarded oil drilling pipe used to support the BAVINGER HOUSE roof, and, furthermore, the bowl-shaped rooms hanging from that, is a nod to the recycling [rarely heard in the 1950's]of materials to shave costs...
The other difference between Lloyd Wright and Goff? Price. Often Lloyd Wright's constructions were overbudget; Goff, by virtue of the pipe and Natural stone/slag glass Walls, was able to bring the BAVINGER house to completion for $2,000. (USD 1955)
Frank Lloyd Wright built special furniture for every home. Goff built the furniture integral to the home. He used a Diner booth instead of a dining 'room. A precursor to the conversation pit popularized in the seventies, his hanging saucer room (Bavinger House)had a circular sofa and 'rim' sofa table around the outer edge...while hanging over a lower floor fish pond!
If 'seeing is believing[' seeing GOFF in 3-D is having your FAITH confirmed.

This is a super cool idea and Goff is the perfect architect to start a series/craze such as this. If you don't buy these reels, at least check out some traditional publications on Bruce Goff.
