"A Different Approach to Financial Planning", December 14, 2001
This review is from: Bruce Helmer's Successful Financial Planning (Paperback)
As a professional financial advisor, I found Helmer's book to be a real gem.
Traditional financial planning is generally myopic, i.e, most planners offer the same advice: "Max your qualified plan contributions, relax with 'dollar cost averaging', minimize protection against catastrophic losses, buy index funds to minimize expenses and 'ride the market', measure 'needs' and buy the minimum amount of life insurance for the shortest time possible, etc., etc."
Mr. Helmer shoots 'sacred cows' by the herd as he instructs the reader to focus on maximizing their financial potential, minimize unnecessary risks and expenses, maximize control over one's assets, maintain flexibility, and freedom of movement.
His writing style is very clear. Unlike most other books on the subject, Helmer's book is easy to read, refreshing, and full of practical ideas and tips. Each chapter has an excellent summary highlighting the issues and concepts for better retention of the material.
As a fellow professional in the Twin Cities, I know Mr. Helmer only from a distance. My strongest testimony for what he has written is the fact that I give his book to my clients as the best book I have ever found as a primer to the valuable activity known as "personal financial planning".
This book is an excellent investment in your future!

Dispels financial planning myths, fallacies and deceptions, March 10, 2001
This review is from: Bruce Helmer's Successful Financial Planning (Paperback)
In his Successful Financial Planning, Bruce Helmer dispels financial planning myths, fallacies and deceptions which serve as very real pitfalls for the unwary novice investor. With his completely "user friendly" approach, Helmer shows how to enhance wealth (not just "save money"); pick strategies, not products; accelerate the earning power of money; avoid pretax problems, and provides a straightforward reference guide to investments. The latest volume in the Specialty Press "User-Friendly Financial Series", Successful Financial Planning is a very highly recommended and readable "how to" book, ideal for the beginning investor and personal money manager.

Terrific...should become the "bible" for financial planning, November 24, 2007
This review is from: Bruce Helmer's Successful Financial Planning (Paperback)
Bruce Helmer completely hits the mark with this book. He concentrates on strategies to enhance wealth, but more importantly, he takes taxes, and most importantly, legal tax avoidance under advisement that will SAVE you money in the long run. His book takes you into the process of getting what you want in the long term, and more importantly, you don't have to have a great deal of money to start..gives great advice about "needs V. wants" and how one should systematically spend down their money in retirement. I've seen one review that talks about fees, but that is short sighted and shows nothing but a lack of understanding of the entire process...I highly recommend this book to anyone who is TRULY interested in wealth accumulation.
