Editorial Reviews

In his first smash hit movie, Bruce Lee stars as Cheng, a young man who moves to Bangkok to take a job in an ice factory with his cousins. One day, when a block of ice is cracked open, two workers find out that something is being smuggled inside the blocks of ice. The two workers disappear without a trace and Cheng starts to investigate their disappearance. He soon finds out that the factory is smuggling heroin…and comes face to face with the Big Boss for a climactic showdown!

Bruce Lee stars as Chen, who arrives in Shanghai to attend the funeral of his teacher. He vows to uncover what happened to his mentor and all signs point to the local Japanese Martial Arts School, who have been taunting and insulting the students of the Ching Wu School. The local police won’t do anything about the death, so Chen decides to restore honor to his school and his teacher by bringing some furious vengeance down upon the Japanese school!

3.0 out of 5 stars Re-release of the same films on DVD May 1, 2013
For years now owning the Two-Disc Special Edition of "Enter the Dragon" and The Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection has sufficed when it's come to owning Bruce Lee's films. Shout! Factory, in addition to their Jackie Chan Double Feature line, has two Bruce Lee Double Feature releases lined up on DVD; one DVD release for "The Big Boss" and "Fist of Fury" and another release for "The Way of the Dragon" and "Game of Death."

On the DVD for "The Big Boss/Fist of Fury," the movies are unchanged from previous releases and all of the flaws and edits that you've come to expect in both films are still there. One of the things that was brought to light during this viewing of "The Big Boss" is that the voices of two characters swap around the 26:30 mark and then swap back a moment later. While the price is relatively affordable, the DVD is also unnecessary especially if you already have the films. If you own The Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection, then it may be worth picking up these two DVDs to save shelf space and finally have the opportunity to get rid of the downright terrible "Game of Death II."

Some mini reviews practically wrote themselves after purchasing The Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection, but were polished up for these releases. Here's a look at the "The Big Boss" review:

"The 70s cheese that's present in every Bruce Lee film seems overexposed in the film that would eventually lead to him becoming a martial arts action star. 'The Big Boss' is very similar to 'Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky' in tone, but was slaughtered by the MPAA. The over the top violence is only held back by the heavy amount of cuts in the film. Despite being Lee's bloodiest film, it's extremely edited compared to what was shown in theaters in '71.

Cannot believe Shout! Factory would do injustice to Bruce Lee and his fans. The two films on this disc only have English (5.1 or 2.0) and NO Cantonese language!! Maybe most people like watching people's mouths move and the words don't follow the mouths, but I don't! Cannot believe it does not state English dub on the cover. Most foreign films are offered in their original language (at least as one of the choices). This is worse than I remember growing up and watching Kung Fu Theater on TV. At least get the dubbing half right. You get sounds inserted when they shouldn't be there! Laughably bad!! Even the sound effects are bad. These look to be the same prints from years ago in the Bruce Lee Ultimate Collection (except the soundtracks). This is horrible, to say the least. Ten bucks gone to waste! Wonder if the blu ray imports are as bad? His Hong Kong films need to stay just that. Foreign films. Why do Americans have to ruin a good thing? I will stick with my old DVDs that are in their original languages until something better comes along.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! August 14, 2014

Brand new! Nice dvd case with a Bruce Lee side-kick inside. The sound/picture quality is good and clear (fist of fury has the better) looks 3D at times, dvd setup looks professional.100% original film, dubbing, and sound effects! My original review was a bit different but as with all things, the more time you spend with it, the more you grow to like or dislike it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't need DVD! April 6, 2013
By cat man
Great movies but I really don't see the reason to release them once again on DVD. And I personally don't like this cheap two on one dvd thing. Fans here in north America have been waiting for the release of the Bruce Lee movies on blu ray for years. I purchased the Japanese Bruce Lee blu rays released by paramount pictures & the picture is great compared to dvd & considering their age. The latest Japanese blu rays released 2012/11/09 have English soundtracks (no English subtitles) & are region A same as north America.
