The Story So Far...

The term Springsteenian is thrown around a lot these days, as the living legend's influence is felt on a new generation of musicians. But what is Springsteenian, anyway? There's the sweeping grandiosity of Born to Run, felt on the latest albums by Arcade Fire and the Killers. There's the feverish storytelling and carousing street kids, for which the Hold Steady will be forever obliged (Charlemagne, meet the Magic Rat). Springsteenian can imply hyper-verbose, as on his first records from the early '70s, or hyper-observant and uncluttered; music that's complex and baroque, or stripped-down and stark. On the stage, the term suggests marathon performances, giving it all you've got, creating a community with the crowd, making a stadium feel like an arena and an arena feel like a living room. Rock 'n' roll abandon, a perfectionist's discipline, celebration, desperation, defiance, hope, despair--they're all what makes the engine run. --Christopher Phillips, Editor Backstreets Magazine, www.backstreets.com

Biography

When Bruce Springsteen finally broke through to national recognition in the fall of 1975 after a decade of trying, critics hailed him as the savior of rock & roll, the single artist who brought together all the exuberance of '50s rock and the thoughtfulness of '60s rock, molded into a '70s style. He rocked as hard as Jerry Lee Lewis, his lyrics were as stirring as Bob Dylan's, and his concerts were near-religious celebrations of all that was best in music. One critic became so enamored that he quit reviewing to become Springsteen's manager.

But the hosannas, when piped through the publicity… Read more

Bruce Springsteen, nicknamed 'The Boss', was born in 1949 in New Jersey. His blend of rock, folk and social awareness would see him dubbed the heir to Woody Guthrie and set him apart from his power rock contemporaries.

He began his career playing the New Jersey night club circuit with Steven Van Zandt, with whom he would later go on to form the E Street Band.

Springsteen's first albums, Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle (both 1973), were both praised by critics without finding much favour with the public. However, third album Born to Run brought… Read more

Who's Really the Boss?

Longtime E Street Band member Patti Scialfa has just released Play it as it Lays, her most honest, self-assured album to date. Featuring not only Patti's own roots rock-based songwriting, the album also includes contributions from Willie Weeks, Nils Lofgren, Cliff Carter, and Mr. Springsteen himself.
