5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful romantic music, November 12, 2007
This review is from: Bruch: Violin Concerto No. 1; Romance, Op. 42; Scottish Fantasy (Audio CD)
Trusting my simple untrained ears, I declare this among the most poignant and sweet classical music I've ever heard. The solo violin sheds beautiful, breathtaking tears. This is the kind of classical music that ordinary people want to hear. Find a lover, dim the lights, and put on this music.

However, according to what I read, Bruch is not rated very highly among the "great composers," and I know nothing of music theory to challenge that evaluation. Something about how he's derivative of Mendelssohn. Well, reading that inspired me to try some Mendelssohn, and based on what I've heard so far I have to say that Bruch's music is much more beautiful. As far as I know (admitting that it isn't very far), the only composers whose music reaches these depths of pathos are Beethoven, Chopin and Tchaikovsky. That's elite company, and if Bruch doesn't belong there I don't know why.

Anyway, I encourage anyone to try it and see what you think.
