5.0 out of 5 stars Grand Tour May 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
If you're searching for a definitive recording of these two violin concertos, I recommend this CD. I compared the Mendelssohn to another recording I have to hear the difference. My old version was like driving quickly past a fabulous garden in a tour bus with tinted windows. All the notes were there, but it was flat and tired.

Philippe Quint's recording of the same piece has every wonderful aspect highlighted, as if you're hearing it for the first time. Philippe and the Orquestra de Minería show you exactly why these are great works to begin with. They invest each note with a lifetime of meaning, drawing it together in a dramatic journey. In fact, having just gotten this I've been mostly repeating the Bruch concerto -- there is just so much to absorb.

When I ordered this CD I didn't realize it includes a DVD. You get to see Mexico City and the hall where this was recorded, and hear Philippe Quint talk about the works. Deserves more than five stars!

Violinist Philippe Quint has given us some good stuff. His Korngold violin concerto on Naxos comes out very high on the lists.

Korngold: Violin Concerto / Schauspiel Overture / Much Ado About Nothing

Now we get very challenging 'warhorse' classical violin repertoire, newly released in high resolution super audio, along with a documentary discussion DVD.

The only thing left to say in either the Bruch first violin concerto, or in the Mendelssohn E minor ... is .... What?

Glancing at your fav shelves, you will likely reacquaint yourself with many incredible fiddlers of the past and present - Grumiaux, Heifetz, Joseph Suk (grandson of Dvorak), Nathan Milstein, Isaac Stern, Zino Francescatti, Perlman, Menuhin, Szeryng, David Oistrakh, Leonid Kogan, Johanna Martzy, Misha Elman, Ruggiero Ricci ... You can select from among Joshua Bell, Vengerov, Mullova, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Midori, Ehnes, Cho-Liang Lin, Salerno-Sonnenberg, Gil Shaham, Schlomo Mintz. ... and (perhaps) the Heifetz of our times, Nikolai Znaider.

It's hard to find a player, halfway worth the listen that hasn't given us a Bruch first or a Mendelssohn E minor.

Do we need Philippe Quint? Do we want Quint on the shelf, too?

My ears tell me, emphatically: Yes. Yes indeed.

Technically, this super audio disc has state of the recording arts sound. It is richly captured in remarkably glowing tones, especially the regional orchestra's woodwinds. The bottom end is hearty, no matter whether those basses and cellos are bowed or plucked.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing! April 30, 2012
By Capitan
Format:Audio CD
Living in Peru, I was interested to discover the work of the Orquestra de Minería but when I listened to this album for the first time I felt literaly in love with this recording. What a violinist ! What an orchestra ! The conductor, Carlos Miguel Prieto was unknown to me but I must point out his exciting conducting ! I have never recently heard such fire, passion and deep understanding in any other version of these rightly celebrated masterpieces from the repertoire.
The DVD Bonus, although in PAL is very well conceived. I wish I could attend the recording sessions personally.

Philippe Quint and his ruby Stradivarius is superb on this CD. I have recently purchased all his CDs and never been disappointed. This CD is fantastic and the only thing that could make them better is a coordinating DVD to actually WATCH him play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post Christmas Emotion High January 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
In the waning days of the year 2013 our flagging energies and emotions needed a pickup badly! Music has always been the surest way to over come any blues in our lives. This CD did that and more. It has been played so many times we have learned passages of it by heart. The lyrical quality of Philippa's playing of the Bruch especially touched us and the rich, warm sounds of his priceless violin have given us a memorable way to start 2014! thank you!
