Naxos does it again . . .,
This review is from: Bruckner: Motets (Audio CD)
The smaller Bruckner choral works are marvelous pieces, and despite the admiration they engender from choral affaciandos, they are underrepresented in the catalog. In this recording, the Choir of St. Bride's Church (London) give a warm, beautiful accounting of these gems. Particularly fine is the first track, Os justi. In my mind, the Bruckner motets are optimally performed with a larger choir; but the twelve members of the St. Bride's choir sing admirably well, and their numbers are probably more in line with the forces Bruckner actually had at St. Florian's. Give it a try - for the price you can't go wrong . . .

Heaven on Earth,
This review is from: Bruckner: Motets (Audio CD)
I bought this cd because I wanted these motets all on one disc. Too bad for the other Ryan who put this disc away. The recording is of the highest I have ever heard from Naxos, and which helps even more is that it is recorded in a church (with fantastic acoustics), and sung by the church's own professional choir. It feels as if Bruckner has authorized this himself. The sounds that emerge are clean, clear and beautifully gorgeous. When I first listened to them, I really couldn't believe what I was listening to. I had to stop what I was doing because these motets moved me so much and to the greatest heights that I couldn't believe these sounds were created for the human ear! I also have Jochum doing them, and have heard the Matthew Best recordings but these spoke to me in such a way that I thought that I was listening to miracles! From what I know these are the only complete motets available on one disc. Experiencing these pieces is like being cleansed from all impurities. I seriously urge you to invest in this disc. (I hope the other Ryan reconsiders)

Exquisite music, but not the best recording,

I bought this disc on the strength of the Penguin Guide's 3-star review. I am sorry to say that this was one of the rare instances where I could not agree with the Penguin's assessment. To be sure, the accoustic's great, and if you are a fan of the great English choral tradition you'll probably love this disc.
However, if you want a recording (especially of the locus iste) that has heart and presence, get the Jochum on Deutsche Grammophon. This Naxos was just too sterile for my taste.

Bruckner: Motets,

Bruckner: Motets is a recording under the direction Robert Jones who leads the Choir of St Bride's Church on this Naxos recording from 1994. Keith Anderson has written the music notes. The lyrics are only available in latin which is a shame. Still a good recording. Recommended. 4/5.

Poor performance of Great music,

Listening to Bruckner's motets can be very enjoyable. I purchased this CD with high anticipation. Unfortunately, the choir's performance left much to be desired. Poor tuning, strained voices, and a lack of attention to sonority and nuance encouraged me to shelve this CD and look for a replacement.

There are not many records of Bruckner motets, so I was happy to find this CD. I bought it together with Hyperion Bruckner Motets (ASIN: B000002ZGK)
No critic about performance or recordings quality, but finally I am no singer, just someone who likes classic music and Bruckner.
