As a nursing student, we used the 9th edition of this textbook as our primary resource for Med-Surg information. I had a strong love/hate relationship with that textbook (details to follow), and purchased this updated version after my copy of the 9th edition became damaged beyond practical use. This edition has many of the same strengths (and weaknesses) as the 9th edition, and I still believe with some editing, it could be a truly outstanding textbook. The 10th edition follows the lead of many other medical-surgical textbooks and split what had been a gigantic (read: backpack-breaking) volume into two separate bound volumes. This variation lands in both the "good" and "bad" columns (see below).

First, THE GOOD: It is unarguably EXHAUSTIVE in the depth of information presented, thus it makes an EXCELLENT reference material. The explanations of diseases, disorders, treatments, and techniques are clear and concise, albeit very dense. Don't expect to be able to skim anything here - absolutely every word seems necessary, no space is wasted. One can gain a great deal of confidence when one has absolute confidence in the validity of their textbook. Brunner & Suddarths projects that kind of reliability. The splitting of the text into two volumes improves the usability of this text for the simple reason that the previous edition was so huge and unwieldy that it was often left at home just for the sake of lumbar-saving convenience. This "improvement" has a dark side as well...

THE BAD: Such copious amounts of information require precise and meticulous organization, which Brunner & Suddarth's is sorely lacking. Though it does not take away from the validity of the information, you may initially have some difficulty finding what you're looking for.

This is by far the best nursing textbook I have ever owned. It was worth every penny.

Let me first say I absolutely love this book. I've never seen one so comprehensive -you can NOT beat the amount of GOOD information without useless filler. Each section covers basic review of anatomy along with comprehensive information on procedures, nursing diagnoses, and some drug info. There are great sidebars and pertinent graphics that really help you understand the topic at hand. (Most LWW texts have excellent visual layout, and this one is no exception!) Pretty much EVERYTHING is covered here; If you use only one reference this would be the one. We have 3 different levels of med-surg courses in my nursing school, and all 3 use this as the primary text. I paid a LOT for my copy, but have found the money to be well-spent, because this will remain on my shelves for quite a long time!

Now, I have to address my sole issue, and the reason it isn't getting 5 stars from me: the book is as impractical as can be! It is HUGE and heavy. The sheer size and weight of it may very likely cause you to not utilize it to its fullest potential. Other publishers have taken to separating their med-surg texts into separate volumes for ease of use. Maybe that's not the best idea, but something ought to be done to make this book more student friendly. I have put tabs in my book to mark some of the sections (make it easier to navigate) but it is still a burden to carry. I've heard suggestions that you can take the book to a copy center and have the binding removed and the pages hole-punched so that you only need to carry the pertinent info. Though I haven't seen it done, this may be a useful solution, and LWW would be wise to try and get on the bandwagon by publishing a lighter-weight version!

All in all, though - if you are looking for a comprehensive reference this would be the one! (Just don't expect that you'll be able to carry it all over campus with you!)

What can I say? That book was never my primary book, somebody has passed it to me when I was taking Fundamentals and i've been using it as a reference book since then. I took Med-Surg last semester and it was very helpful. Some topics are very detailed and make more sense with that book. The language is so clear it's amazing. The other day i was reading about a subject in my primary Med-Surg book, it was so complicated that I had to read it over and over again but when i consulted the Brunner and Saddarth's book, It became really clear. The pictures and tables are really helpful also, the Care plans at the end of the chapters also. The only problem is the accompanying CD; I think that it should have more activities and review questions or exercises.

I needed an affordable, up to date text book, to review for a nursing agency's general nursing and pharmacology exam. This particular book is a 2004 edition, bought from Amazon, from a seller who was local, and supplied the book in a timely manner as I requested.I found the book very helpful, and a good resource to have in my personal library. The book was delivered brand new, in it's cellophane wrapper, with an accompanying unopened CD.
I would recommend this book to any student nurse or professional like myself whose last edition of Brunner and Suddarth is 40 years old!

This book was very complete, organized well and came with a CD. I am a retired RN and wanted it to stay abreast of the changes in Nursing. I have had a few friends come to me with nursing questions about their care and I don,t want to give them faulty information about their care or suggest something that may have been found not to be helpful or even harmful. This book met that need. Though it was used, it arrived promptly in excellent condition (including the CD, which had never been opened) as the seller described. I was very pleased and would buy thru Amazon often in the future.
