5.0 out of 5 stars Rec'd. both volumes exactly as described!
After reading some negative reviews, I was afraid I would only receive one volume. Both volumes arrived at my door SUPER fast. I was under the impression that two cd's came with this order, but it looks like only one cd is included with one of the volumes. I'm not going to worry about it as the ISBN # matches the one on my college bookstore list. The books came...

I'm not going to worry about it as the ISBN # matches the one on my college bookstore list. The books came shrinkwrapped and in fabulous condition.

Thought I would add to the good reviews here in case anyone else was in my former position and hesitant to order.

Thanks, Amazon!

5.0 out of 5 stars Item as described, July 6, 2011

I ordered direct from Amazon and received exactly what I expected. I received Volume 1 and Volume 2, each brand new and individually shrink wrapped. Volume 1 included a DVD-ROM and a scratch off code to use online. While I haven't used these features yet, I just wanted to add my review since there seems to be some concern with people not receiving both volumes. For this reason I chose not to order from a marketplace seller (some of which stated their sales did not include the DVD or scratch off code) I am taking an RN refresher course which requires me to have access to some of these extra features.

3.0 out of 5 stars Provides much information but not in a concise way., December 27, 2011
I have the complete edition of this book (both volumes together) and did not buy it from Amazon, but I figured I would leave a review on the actual content of the book and how it holds up as an academic text. This was a required text for my Medical-Surgical Nursing lecture. I picked up this book and Sander's Comprehensive Review for the NCLEX RN.

Content: As for as content goes, the book is chock full of it. This is a catch-22 as every chapter seems to follow no specific order in which information is divulged to the reader. Disease and pathologies are just thrown out in seemingly whatever order. It would be much preferable in a systems-based approach rather than a "likeness of disease" based approach (ie Cystic Fibrosis, which affecting lung and pancreatic organs would be better suited in the Endocrine section as opposed to Respiratory - many topics follow this trend). I will give the book point for incorporating useful algorithms and charts, although they can take up the several pages and are often not spaced properly which makes it difficult to read. Overall, the book does cover all the essentials and then some, it's just not the easiest to follow.

Appeal: Another consideration for this book is that it could make better use of medical terminology and scientific implementation. Many discussions on disease pathologies and cellular mechanics are worded very much for the everyday person. Even though it is a nursing text, I believe to better assume our positions as healthcare professionals it would be in our interest to aquire and refine medical language as well as better understand the mechanisms for which WHY things happen in the body instead of applying rudimentary simplified answers and rationales: they're useful for when explaining things to a patient, but may be found lacking when debriefing another health discipline which demands succinct and appropriate terminology.

Personal quip: So far I have not found one Nursing text that doesn't like to trash "big bad ole Medicine" and the "Docs" in a condescending way. Brunner's is no different. While not as obvious, there is an obvious pro-nursing anti-medicine sentiment. It's seemingly hard to find an unbiased text of these sorts. Maybe if they had more PhD in Bio/Chem and MD authors to write the medical management and pathological process parts of the text and have RNs/ARNPs write the nursing management it would be better balanced in terms of information provided.

Overall: 3/5. It acts more like an encyclopedia than a main source of information. My recommendation is to use Saunders or another comprehensive text to get the general idea and use this book as a resources to grab the details as it is clumsy to pull out information that may or may not be relevant. It's expensive, and I breezed through Med-Surge without using it that much so it is very possible to get by without buying it and opting for a cheaper option through a study-guide style book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great to be studying with the right book at a lower price, October 24, 2010

This review is from: Brunner and Suddarth's Textbook of Medical Surgical Nursing: In One Volume (Brunner & Suddarth's Textbook of Medical-Surgical Nursing) (Hardcover)
I have tried using comparable books to gather the information I needed for my tests. Buying this book allows me to follow the material and get better grades faster. At a much lower price than the school bookstores too.

Easy read: info flows well, easy to understand. I call this book 'Shamu' because of the size - an absolute behemoth! Vendors need to advertise the weight of some books to help clarify whether to buy the 2-volume alternative. Otherwise, an actual nursing book that's well-written and a 'joy' to read!

I only received volume one of this set, I did not receive volume two of this book. Very upset and I am wondering why I did not receive the second volume two?

5.0 out of 5 stars Giant, Informative book, September 30, 2011
By
Jason (Kansas City) - See all my reviews
When I first go this book, I thought there was going to be a lot of extra, useless material in the book. After going through it, it's such an excellent book, helps explain so many pathological diseases, medical and nursing care, and pretty much every med-surg case you can imagine. my only complaint is I wish I had the two-volume set, since I have the single volume book and it is very large and a ton to haul with everywhere.

1.0 out of 5 stars A TURN FOR THE WORST, January 7, 2011

I USED TO LOVE THIS TEXTBOOK WHAT I USED TO LOVE THE MOST WAS HAVING ACCESS TO THEPOINT WEBSITE. [...] IS SUPPLEMENTAL SITE included with most textbooks by lippincott just scratch & enter the access code with all new textbooks and have this student resources to facilitate learning, but what truly was excellent was being able to print individual chapters from your book . This is what help me pass my med surge course. I would print the chapters read, write carry them anywhere on the subway , bus. No other nursing books publishers to my knowledge gave you the option to print the whole chapters. Too good to be true since this option is no longer available you cannot print chapters thru the ebook option since lippincott implement a new feature to read your chapters online thru ipublishcentral which totally suck. Ebook is the text Medical-Surgical nursing 12ed but with online assess.
