Book Description

September 15, 1997 4 and up
Meet Bruno, beaver of all trades.

Today Bruno is in the kitchen baking a birthday treat with his little helper, Felix.

In this introduction to baking, young children can follow Bruno and Felix step by step as they make a cake. From cracking and beating eggs to blending the batter, no task is too difficult for this baking team (except maybe the clean-up!). The simple, engaging text and the easy-to-follow recipe at the end of the book will encourage future bakers. With the help of an adult, children can make their cake and eat it, too, just like the lovable birthday beaver, Bruno.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K. It's Bruno the beaver's birthday. With the help of his young friend, Felix, he makes a cake following step-by-step instructions. While the text explains their actions, the pleasant and well-defined watercolor illustrations clearly show the tools and ingredients used. Felix doesn't like the noise of the blender but is good at licking the bowl. Bruno is the one who reads the recipe (included at the end), uses the mixer, and puts the cake in the oven. They clean up together while the cake is baking and when the table is set and ready, more friends arrive to join in the fun. Being little more than an illustrated cooking lesson, the story itself is fairly humdrum. However, the artwork is appealing and the occasional questions in the narrative, e.g., "What do you think Bruno gets as a present?" will involve children.?Martha Topol, Traverse Area District Library, Traverse City, MI

From Booklist

Ages 3^-7. As we saw in Bruno the Tailor (1996) and Bruno the Carpenter (1996), Bruno is one multitalented beaver. This time, he turns his hand to baking his own birthday cake, with the help of his small friend Felix. Klinting blends the story with a step-by-step rundown on how to bake a cake (the recipe ends the book); for instance, Bruno enthusiastically wields his electric mixer until the eggs and sugar "are fluffy and almost white," but we see Felix wince and hold his ears against the noise. The gently humorous watercolors have just the right blend of realistic detail and funny touches, as they show the kitchen becoming progressively messier--"but that's okay." Warmth, charm, and specific detail make this a winning introduction to baking for young would-be chefs. Susan Dove Lempke

My 4 year old daughter loves all of the Bruno books but Bruno theBaker is her favorite. Children this age love to learn how to do newthings and the Bruno books give step by step explanations while still being very entertaining. The illustrations are especially adorable. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for beginning readers, October 15, 2001

This review is from: Bruno the Baker (Hardcover)
This book is great. Young readers will find it easy to follow, and will be enchanted by the story of Bruno and his friend Felix as they bake a birthday cake. Be warned, there is a cake recipe at the end of the book, and your child will most certainly want to try it.

After purchasing this book for my son, I decided to buy two more copies for his classroom library. Besides having a great story and pictures, the hardback book has thick pages that should stand up well to constant readings.
